For those looking for the ultimate challenge, here is one just for you.

The Upstream 50km Challenge is happening in Melbourne on Saturday 16 November 2013. Get ready to be part of the greatest fundraising event, and perhaps the most difficult walk you'll ever do.

The Course

Beginning at Docklands, the course goes along the beautiful Yarra River to the eastern suburbs, follows Mullum Mullum Creek at Templestowe and ends in Donvale, where celebrations, yummy food and fun activities will be there to mark the end of this event.

A detailed map book is available and you don't have to worry about getting lost because the track will be clearly marked on the day. There are checkpoints every 10km and participants must check in with staff before continuing on.

Registration

Whether you register as an individual, team or relay, you're guaranteed to have a great time whilst accomplishing this amazing challenge. Individuals are required to walk the whole 50km; teams must walk the entire 50km together; and relay teams need at least 2, and no more than 10, people with each person walking at least 30km.

There is no registration fee, but there's a catch. Each participant must raise at least $200 (easy!) in donations of which $50 will be requested during registration. Register by Friday 8 November and 100% of the funds you raise will go to your elected beneficiary.

This isn't a timed event, but prizes will be awarded in this friendly competition to various participants including the highest fundraisers.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries for this year's event are Disability Sport Recreation , Leprosy Mission Australia , Fare Share and The Isabella and Marcus Fund . You can choose to have your donation shared between all the beneficiaries, or it can all go to one beneficiary.

Funds donated to Disability Sport Recreation will go towards specialist sporting and recreation equipment for Victorians with disability, while funds donated to The Leprosy Mission will go towards the rehabilitation programs in Timor Leste, which aims to ultimately better their quality of life for people suffering from leprosy.

Money raised by Upstream Challenge will go towards the fit out of Fare Share's new kitchen, where they produce free meals and then deliver to local food charities for free, and money donated to The Isabella and Marcus Fund will fund research desperately needed to develop treatments for paediatric brainstem tumours.

4 different beneficiaries. 4 different causes. Now you just have to pick one that's closest to your heart.

Training

This definitely isn't a walk in the park hence you need to start training as soon as you can. Start with a 10 minute walk and go from there. Gradually increase your walking time, build up your distance and do a 35km walk a month before the event. So get your calendar out, follow some training tips and start planning your training schedule.

What are you waiting for? Register to participate, donate to Upstream Foundation or volunteer on the day. Whichever way you decide to take part in this fabulous event, it is definitely a worthy cause.
