The bright yellow doorway is a welcome sign at the front entrance of Upstate Yoga in Balaclava on this cool and rainy Saturday morning. As we climb up the matching yellow stairwell, it feels like we are already ascending to a lighter, happier and warmer place...
We are greeted by the lovely, smiley Tyson on the front desk who welcomes us to the studio and explains where everything is. The yoga room is behind us, free lockers along the wall on the left and toilets, showers and a water fountain to top up our drink bottles are all on the other side of the stairwell.
We're pretty eager to get on the mat, so we quickly put our things away in a locker and head into the studio. It's a long, narrow room with two rows of mats. Windows on one side face the main street (Carlisle St) and floor to ceiling mirrors line up the opposite wall. Exposed brick detailing adds a warehouse feel to the space where 'Find your update' is printed - a larger-than-life reminder that we are here to create our best self.
The windows are still open and the room has not yet heated up, then Tyson walks in for our 9:00am Hot Power Flow yoga class! He shuts the windows and tells us it's time to create some heat up in here... It's fully booked class and we can feel the energy in the air - we're ready!
I don't practice HOT yoga often, so I thought I might struggle a bit, but I didn't have to throw off my shirt until halfway through - when I really started to notice sweat dripping off my body. That's not to say it wasn't hot enough - some of the others in the class were sweating within our first few flows, so it's all relative.
One thing is for sure - you will sweat, so remember to bring a towel for a mid-class wipe down or two!
For a regular yoga practitioner the poses and flow of the class was not super challenging physically, but if you're new it will not be easy. But there's only one way to work on that flexibility, strength and stamina right?! Practice, practice, practice. And Tyson's supportive nature means there's no pressure to push yourself further than your limit!
The black Lulu Lemon yoga mats provided for use in the class were new and clean, and the whole studio was well kept and decorated in that popular modern minimal decor with splashes of yellow paint to keep the energy light and open.
I took a quick peek (and photo - see below) of the Pilates room next door - may be a class to try next time?
Overall, we found Upstate Yoga a lovely new space and experience. The staff were all very friendly, and the morning yoga class was a great way to kick start the weekend. I would definitely come back if I lived closer to the area, and will probably return if I am ever going to be in the area again.
