Deviating from the Ordinary
It's a long weekend so there's three glorious days to go and explore, perhaps see places and do things you haven't done before. Here's a collection of some of the out-of-the-ordinary events and activities happening this Queen's Birthday long weekend.
Sauna Sail – Latrobe Valley
Latrobe Valley Yacht Club's iconic Sauna Sail on Hazelwood Pondage will be running over the three days of the Queen's Birthday long weekend from 11th to 13th June. The event is so named due to the pondage having its own hot water system – otherwise known as a power station – which keeps the water at a comfortable 22 - 24 degrees Celcius. Visitors are very welcome to come and watch, it's quite an amazing spectacle with multiple colourful yachts racing on the pondage and sometimes, when the weather conditions are really cold, the yachts can appear to be floating within a ghostly mist. There are good vantage points for viewing and a kiosk for food and drink. Should you wish to sail in the regatta, it's for off the beach and trail-able yachts and details on how to enter can be found on the website.

Port Fairy Winter Weekends running from 10 June to 24 July offer a multitude of events and activities including food and wine, kids activities, music, performance, markets and more. The 10th Anniversary Dachshund Dash is of special note. To be held on Sunday 12th June, 11:00am 12:00 at Southcombe Park, Port Fairy, it's great fun for participants and spectators alike. There are also a range of novelty events (including other breeds) along with "The Dash" heats and finals. See their program for full details.
Australian Rope Quoits Championships - Coleraine
This would have to be one of the more unusual sporting activities on show over the long weekend. The Coleraine Rope Quoits Association is hosting the 66th Australian Singles and Teams Quoits Championships over Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June. Singles and team events will feature some of the best players from Melbourne, Sydney, Ballarat, Bendigo and Broken Hill. For more information see here.
But wait, there's more:
Portsea Hotel is hosting a snow themed party (with snow) at the Portsea Hotel's Snow Jam, learn more about whales and go on a winter whale cruise at Phillip Island on Winter Whale Weekend, take a Burlesque Showboat Cruise in Melbourne or perhaps go Rap Jumping just for fun (and possibly a touch of terror).
And finally, for something completely different in accommodation for the weekend, why not try a yurt, a boat or perhaps a more lofty accommodation in a treehouse,
