The Adelaide Fringe is one of the largest festivals in the Southern Hemisphere that brings artists, performers and creatives from all over the world to our beautiful, little city for a month of jam-packed festivities, activities, and shows.
Whether you're new to the Fringe scene or have been an avid supporter of the festival for years, one thing that makes the Adelaide Fringe so attractive and unique is its lineup of interesting acts / shows / personalities that colour the arts scene with their ingenious skillset. However, this year, the Adelaide Fringe has stepped it up a notch by introducing a myriad of venues that are...unconventional (to say the least)!
Think of the most obscure location for a Fringe venue and chances are...there's a Fringe show at that venue! From hot air balloons to swimming pools to a dunny (a toilet, for you non-Australian readers), there are some incredible and interesting shows, exhibitions, and acts that you should consider checking out this season!
Here's a list of 8 unusual Fringe venues, where you can really get into the Fringe spirit - leave your imagination at the door, because these are some ways to enjoy an Adelaide Fringe show that you may have not probably imagined:
Location: Adelaide Aquatic Centre swimming pool Show: Wet Sounds Having personally attended this show last year, I can safely say that, if you are a lover of swimming, music, a level of interaction, and a sensory experience unlike any other, then you absolutely must check out Wet Sounds at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre. The deeper you go into the pool, the more intense and immersive the music surrounding you in the water will become. While you may be a bit unsure of what to expect from it initially, you won't want to get out of the water towards the end of the show. And while it might seem a bit daunting to get into the pool with at least 50 other people, the pool is generously sized enough to give anyone and everyone their own sense of space.
Location: West Terrace Cemetery Show: 'Mavericks, Madness and Murder Most Foul!" One of the most unusual places to do a Fringe show - at night, might we add - is the West Terrace Cemetery, where audience members will be taken on a guided tour that will appeal greatly to those who are after a sense of adventure, mystery, and even a bit of thriller! True to its name, "Mavericks, Madness and Murder Most Foul!" will deliver a show that will be decorated with light and sound effects to fully grasp the eerie atmosphere of walking among the living and the dead. Rest assured, you won't be left alone in the cemetery - whether you like it or not!
Location: nthspace Dunny at nthspace Adelaide
Show: Who Gives a Crap?
No, you didn't read that wrong! There is, indeed, a show that has been placed in a dunny for your quality entertainment and artistic needs!
Aptly described as the 'funny dunny', Who Gives A Crap? will take you on a journey around toilets from all over the world in a little cubicle, thanks to the incredibly innovative artist Susan Belperio. With materials that are made from 100% recycled toilet paper, Belperio hopes to push the artistic boundaries with her creations in a truly one-of-a-kind Fringe venue.
Location: A Shipping Container in the Garden of Unearthly Delights
Shows: FLIGHT & SÉANCE
Theatrical flair in a shipping container? Now, that's a standout!
Taking its audience on a journey that they've probably never experienced before, FLIGHT is the sister of beloved show SÉANCE, which will also be making a return appearance at this year's Fringe festival. No lights, no cameras, but lots of action happening nonetheless in this 20 minute experience that will leave you feeling all kinds of emotions - all of which will most likely have your heart racing from the adrenaline!
Another great experience that I got last-minute tickets to (last year), SÉANCE is another fantastic thriller style experience that will throw all levels of rationality and reasoning out the window. Another show done in complete darkness, audience members will be invited to immerse themselves in a show that primarily runs on dialogue, commentary, and sound effects that are coupled with sensory-seeking mysteries that will unintentionally give chills to your bones, no matter how balmy the evening at the Garden may be!
Location: An Adelaide Metro Bus
Show: Sing-a-Long Op Shop
A sold-out show from Adelaide Fringe 2018 will be gracing us with its presence yet again this year! Sing-a-long Op Shop is for those who thrive on bargains and op-shopping - one of the best forms of retail therapy - but also love having fun by injecting a sense of music, song, and dance into the mix. Jump on an Adelaide Metro bus and be prepared to be taken around Adelaide and its surrounding suburbs, as you visit some of the well-loved second hand / vintage op-shops and sing your way through this colourful and enjoyable day out with strangers, who will hopefully become your friends by the end of the day.
Location: MV Dolphin Explorer
Shows: Floating Melodies & Pirates of Penzance
Jump on the grand MV Dolphin Explorer and become part of the incredible event Floating Melodies, which will celebrate the best of South Australian culture, food, drinks, and music. Held on Valentines Day as part of a sunset cruise, this is the perfect opportunity to spoil your loved one - be it your partner, your gal pal, your bro, your best friend, or anyone who deserves to feel special - and simultaneously get into the Adelaide Fringe spirit before it even begins! With a warm and breezy evening awaiting us in February, chances are that the weather, the entertainment, and the company will all weave together to present with a day / evening / night that you will never forget (for all the right reasons)!
Pirates of Penzance
What better place to run into a bunch of pirates than on a boat?! A hilarious take on Gilbert and Sullivan's classic operetta, Pirates of Penzance will make sure its audience members are thoroughly immersed into the show for a truly authentic feel out in the seas. Enjoy dolphin watching as you are treated to an hour long show by these 8 talented performers, who have wowed their fans during the Adelaide Fringe season over the last 5 years.
Location: Hot Air Balloon
Show: Floating Melodies
Want to treat someone to a unique Fringe experience on Valentines Day, but are unsure how they'll do in the water? Why not get into a hot air balloon instead? Sure, it's an early start, but wouldn't you want to start your day with your loved one by your side? Kicking off the love in the air with a picturesque view of the Barossa Valley, Floating Melodies will then treat you and your beloved to a romantic locally-sourced breakfast and add a bit of a sparkle with some happiness-inducing tunes, as you watch the sunrise blanket over our beautiful state.
Location: The Popeye Boats
Shows: Pelican Parlour on Popeye & Peek into the Past from The Popeye
Pelican Parlour on Popeye
A fantastic light installation show will be showcased along the Adelaide Riverbank and to get the full experience, there'd be no better way to get into the Fringe spirit than by getting on the Popeye boat with the crew of Pelican Parlour on Popeye. Enjoy a drink or few, watch the sunset, and bask in the beauty of the Karrawirra Parri, as you watch Yabarra Dreaming Light on the Pelican.
Peek into the Past from the Popeye
A historical walkthrough that will introduce audiences to our colonial past, Peek into the Past from The Popeye is a great way to learn more about our original land owners, struggles of the early settlers, and also be enlightened by some stories of our bush rangers.
