An art exhibition highlighting issues around food waste will be held at the Vancouver Arts Centre in Albany in April, launching with a cocktail function on April 1.

Held as part of food and wine festival, Taste Great Southern, the exhibition will feature the works of around 10 artists including Kate Campbell-Pope, Barbie Greenshields, Kevin Draper, Jill O'Meehan, Mick O'Doherty, Sandy O'Doherty, Anne Walmsley, Shaun Wake-Mazey and Lizzie Riley.

Visual Arts Officer for the Vancouver Arts Centre, Indra Geidans says artists will be creating artworks from dry food products that are outside their use by date and would deal with issues of waste, over-consumption, gluttony and excess.

The raw materials for the artworks are being donated by members of the community and will be used to produce a single installation created by all of the artists rather than featuring individual pieces.

The artists will be acknowledged in one didactic panel for the entrance to the exhibition.

The artworks will be produced primarily from dry food products to avoid any risk of offensive odours and to comply with health and safety regulations for the gallery's patrons.

The works will be in both 2D and 3D.

As part of a statement on recycling and food presentation, Indra said packaging is likely to be included in some of the artworks.

She said one artist is working with plastic packaging encrusted in sugar, and also stitching used teabags together.

None of the artworks in the installation will be for human consumption, however food being presented for the cocktail event, will come with a unique twist.

The cocktail launch on Wednesday April 1 from 6pm to 8pm is ticketed with pre-purchase tickets costing $50 or for $60 at the door.

Guests wanting to be among the first to see the exhibition are encouraged to put on their finest for the cocktail event on the Wednesday evening.

The ticket price includes a complimentary cocktail, or soft drink for under 18s, canape platters made with local produce, roaming musicians and a room full of food art.

Admission to the exhibition from April 2 to April 4 is free.

The Vancouver Arts Centre is at 85 Vancouver Street, Albany.
