Pancake day is an annual event, also known as Shrove Tuesday. Anyone can hold an event to celebrate Pancake Day and raise funds to support UnitingCare. Pancakes can be sweet or savoury, healthy or quite decadent. Whichever way they come, it is definitely 'pancake time'!

Each year, groups, individuals, schools, churches, businesses and organisations are invited to hold their own Pancake Day event to raise much-needed funds for the disadvantaged and raise awareness of poverty. This year, Pancake Day is on Tuesday, February 16th. Pancake Day is all about: community, learning, enjoying an activity together and most of all: helping others. Pancake Day events can be held anytime in February and March.

UnitingCare
UnitingCare is an organisation that helps provide practical support to South Australians in need, including those without a home, people living with disabilities, vulnerable children and adults, older people and families in crisis. Since its inception in 2002, more than one million pancakes have been sold and over $600,000 has been raised by groups state-wide.

Pancake Day Resources
Pancake Day has its own resources and website , which contains info on how to run an event and how to obtain an information pack, recipes and even competitions.

History of Pancake Day
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the day before AshWednesday. For perhaps thousands of years, people in Europe have celebrated this time just before spring. Some historians suggest that a festival of eating pancakes goes as far back as pre-Christian times. In 1439, the first pancake recipe appeared in history, with the first Pancake Races recorded in 1445 in England.

This was the last day to eat all the flour, eggs and dairy products in your kitchen before the start of Lent, which is a time of abstinence and reflection in the 40 days before Easter. The European custom of making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday was one way to use up these 'luxury' items and over the centuries, Shrove Tuesday and pancakes became perfect partners.

Recipes
The Pancake Day website also includes many pancake recipes. Pancakes are easy to make, especially if you cheat and use the packet mix. However, pancake batter is easy to make with whatever recipe you choose. My tip is to try making little ones, as the bigger ones are harder to turn. Check out pancake recipes here .

Happy pancaking!
