The
Darnell Collection is widely believed to be the largest vintage clothing collection in Australia. Originally started by Doris Darnell, a Quaker from Pennsylvania, and since inherited by her god-daughter Charlotte Smith, it has been a labour of love almost 80 years in the making.
Until November 20th 2011, 60 garments, representing fashion from 25 countries, will be on display at
Liverpool City Library . "United by Colour: Fashions from Around the World" has the theme of colour.
The Darnell Collection grew out of donations and gifts from people all around the world. Importantly, most of the items came with accompanying letters, photographs and stories which linked them to the original owners or donors and often to the occasions to which they were worn. The social history behind the items is as important as the items themselves, and preserving them and their stories for future generations is the aim of the collection.
Pieces in the collection include many internationally recognised 20th century designers such as Lucile, Vionnet,
Dior ,
Chanel , Balenciaga, Pucci, Jean Muir, Zandra Rhodes, Westwood, Versace,
Dolce & Gabana and Jil Sander among many others. In addition to the clothes themselves, there is also a vivid array of hats, shoes, bags and other accessories, and a large reference library of books, journals and museum exhibition catalogues.
Liverpool City Library is a large, modern library located in the heart of Liverpool's City Centre. Liverpool
train station is very close by. Limited street parking is available on George Street in addition to the multi storey carpark accessed off Warren Serviceway.
