Good things can come in small packages
Does the mere thought of a shopping centre make you break out in a cold sweat? Does online shopping feel too impersonal? There are plenty of places you can pick up something unique or locally made for those you love this Christmas around Perth, I've found a few to get you started...
Over two locations this festive season, the Perth Makers Market aims to provide a platform for the talented, high quality handmade crafters that call Perth.
Normally located in the family friendly Heathcote Cultural Precinct in Applecross, this popular bi-monthly market has grown to over 150 exclusively handmade stallholders. The remaining market date at Heathcote to stock up for Christmas 2016 is 4 December, 9:30am - 3:30pm.
This market will also be popping-up at Elizabeth Quay for a special Christmas market. Each of the stallholders has been carefully selected and include hand-crafted wares including handmade wooden toys, crafted candles, tasty treats and beautiful jewellery. Running 10 and 11 December from 10am to 6pm. Details on both market locations are available on their website.
It's hard to feel anything but chilled walking the streets of Freo and there are several spots to pick up something different. There are plenty of unique specialty retailers, with many taking part in a Christmas windows trail this year. You can vote for your favourite and enter the draw for a prize, all while ticking off your Christmas shopping list. Full details online.
The next market has built a reputation as the foremost event of its kind in Western Australia for high quality locally designed wares. Yes, I'm talking about the Bazaar at Fremantle Arts Centre. This event attracts a stellar line-up of artists, designers and makers of fashion, jewellery, textiles, homewares and more. One of my favourites is Littlesweet Baking.
Held at Fremantle Arts Centre, it runs 2 December from 5pm to 10pm; 3 December 9am to 5pm; 4 December 9am to 5pm. Find out more on the website.
The last one on the Freo list is MANY 6160, a collaborative shop space that inhabits the former Myer building. It's home to a range of individuals, groups, franchises and businesses running retail operations, and the range is very unique. It also happens to be Australia's largest temporary space activation project. Find out more on their website.
If you really want to beat the crowds head for the hills! Toodyay is home to 360 Christmas, an absolute wonderland for Christmas lovers. This is WA's largest Christmas retailer and they also offer corporate rentals and decoration consulting.
Across the road is Uniquely Toodyay where you can find a range of local produce, art and crafts, open seven days. The Toodyay Farmers Market runs on 18 December from 9am to 1pm, their website is here.
Last but definitely not least, there's the amazing Kalamunda Farmers Market. A special Christmas Market will be held on 11 December from 8am to noon. Think seasonal produce (stone fruit will be in!), plants, arts and crafts, plus activities to keep the kids entertained. Their facebook page has more information.
Keep it small, thoughtful and unique this Christmas!
