A vast country covering over 3, 288 million square kilometres, India encompasses an immense range of fascinating cultures and language groups. Ethnically, religiously and culturally diverse, it's a land of many contrasts, and this is no more apparent than in the country's traditional art-forms – of which textile design is one of the most revered. Bringing all the exotic colour and mystique of India to Perth, the Fremantle Art Centre will be holding an exhibition from Saturday August 1st until Saturday September 19th, celebrating the rich heritage and diversity of Indian textiles.
'' is an elegant and exquisite exhibition, curated by Maggie Baxter – a local artist, who for over 25 years has cultivated an intimate connection with textile makers throughout the subcontinent. The exhibition will lead visitors on a fascinating journey throughout India as they marvel at the intricate embroidery and beadwork of sumptuous fabrics from every part of the country.
Although the production of high quality handcrafted textiles is an Indian art-form that has roots dating back hundreds of years, it's also a living tradition and, even today, textile artists and fashion designers take inspiration from ancient motifs and techniques, utilising them in contemporary works that are just as relevant today as they were in ancient times. With displays of breathtakingly beautiful saris, uncut cloth and modern street wear, 'Unfolding: New Textile Designs' will showcase the best of Indian textile design, and present to visitors the historical contexts that underlie these works, as well as the skills, production methods and motifs that goes into their creation.
In a nutshell, if you've always loved the exquisite and exotic fabrics of India, or simply have an interest in traditional textile design, this is an exhibition that you definitely won't want to miss. To kick the event off to a great start why not attend the special opening on Friday July 31st, at 6.30pm? There will be an Indian feast and a fabulous tabla performance by Vikneswaran Ramakrishnan, as well as some funky beats by Bhangra DJ MixtaBishi. Further enhancing the exotic ambiance, there will be a free henna station at the arts centre for the evening, so if you've always wanted your hands painted in traditional Indian motifs, this might be your big chance.
For those with a particular interest in the subject, Maggie Baxter will also be launching her new book at the exhibition – also titled '', and this will be available at Found, Fremantle Art Centre's wonderful gift-shop.
