What would you do if your life's work suddenly became irrelevant? Or worse still, you lose the will to keep working? This is the premise for 'Unfinished Works', a play by independent theatre company BONTOM.

For anyone who works in a creative field the thought of having a block is their worst nightmare, but it happens. Cleverly written by Thomas De Angelis and directed by Clemence Williams, the story sees Frank Ralcoh (Lucy Goleby), a famous contemporary artist, struggling to complete a commissioned work with a deadline looming. Jimmy, her agent played by Kyle Kazmarzyk, tries to stay calm as he deals with his angst-ridden client.

To make matters worse, Jimmy completely loses it when he finds out some of Frank's work is stolen. How Jimmy handles the situation is both comedic and dramatic at the same time. Kyle Kazmarzyk shows Jimmy's emotional frustration and the audience reacts accordingly with laughter and then remaining eerily quiet when the emotion becomes raw.

The play opens with the two female leads, Frank and Isabel, in their own spaces, Frank trying to tackle the blank canvas and Isabel seemingly enjoying herself as she brushes her canvas with ease. A chance meeting with Isabel's dad Vince (Rhett Walton), brings these two together.

Two artistic women from very different lives, one a famous yet struggling artist, the other studying architecture and living with her parents, both question the worth of their work. The roller coaster of emotions the two go through is clearly evident as the two talented lead actors bare their souls to an appreciative audience. Bring in a third female, Isabel's successful mum Paula (Deborah Galanos) and the emotional turmoil continues.

The play is 90 minutes long, set in Sydney showcasing contemporary Sydney culture. It explores our obsession with work and how we all make sacrifices to achieve in our chosen careers. My guest and myself both enjoyed it, agreeing the actors portrayed city-angst adeptly and the story flowed without any hitches.

Go and see this play, you will enjoy the turmoil that ensues and how chance meetings can change lives. Be quick, it's only a short season. 'Unfinished Works' runs from 23 March to 2 April, click here for tickets.

Sam Boneham and Thomas De Angelis, the talented duo from BONTOM, create new and original work for stage and screen whilst developing emerging talent. Recent works include 'The Worst Kept Secrets (2014) and 'Jack Killed Jack' (2012).
