Underground Backpackers is located in the centre of Northbridge, just a walk away from the centre of Perth and Perth central train station. After staying in several hostels around Perth and Northbridge, I'd say that this wins hands down in terms of friendliness and cleanliness. This is also what one would call a 'working hostel', whereby if you are on a working holiday visa, the staff here will actively point you in the right direction for employment.
They have affiliations with various backpacker promotional companies and nights out in other suburbs such as Leederville and Subiaco, and their staff are more than happy to advice you on where to head out and when if you're new to Perth. They have a swimming pool, which is an added bonus for a relatively cheap hostel, a big clean kitchen, and a range of dorms from 2 bed to 12 bed, mixed and same sex.
If you're coming over to Perth as a backpacker, make this or the YHA in Perth your first port of call. You're guaranteed a clean and friendly experience, you're a train ride away from the beauty of Cottesloe Beach and Fremantle, and you can party pretty much any night of the week. Despite Northbridge's seedy connotations, I lived their for six month's and always felt safe and had the time of my life.
