Under the Same Sky is a children's picture book that was written and illustrated by award-winning author and illustrator Britta Teckentrup and published by Little Tiger Group in 2017. It is 32 pages long and retails for between $10 and $19.99. It is suitable for small children three years old and older. Under the Same Sky is a "peek-through" picture book that has special cut out sections in each of the pages for children to be able to peek through. Under the Same Sky has an important message in it for children and that is all the people around the world sing the same songs, dream the same dreams, play the same games, face the same storms and feel the same love. Britta Teckentrup is telling children that despite our differences and the distances between us, we are all the same, and are all connected through our experiences.

Under the Same Sky is a simple, easy to read, and soothing bedtime story for children. The words rhyme and the verses flow easily into each other. Teckentrup illustrates her story with pictures of animals from different ecosystems from around the world on each of the pages. The animals are meant to represent different families from different cultures around the world. It was the illustrations that drew me to this book. I thought they resembled paper cutouts. The use of colour and shapes was really impressive and reminded me of Shaun Tan's art style.

I also really liked how the peek-through holes were incorporated into the illustrations. The cut-outs are used to contain messages to the reader starting from the front cover which has a cut out of a cloud with the title of the book written inside it. The cutouts are meant to represent the same, but ever-changing, sky.

On the first page we see a picture of three cats sitting on a rooftop and looking up at a cut out of a cloud and the words 'We live under the same sky… in the lands near and far' written on the opposite side of the page. When you turn the page the words 'We live under the same sky…' from the previous page are now seen inside the cloud, but there is a new line written underneath it that reads '…wherever we are' creating a new sentence. The book continues like that through each of the pages. The cutouts change from clouds to raindrops, gusts of wind, and love hearts as well. It gives the book a really lovely, flow on effect.

Under the Same Sky would be a great book to read to young children. The illustrations are immersive and attention grabbing and the story is heartfelt and speaks to everyone.
