This compact bookstore made this bibliophile twitch
Under the greenwood tree,
Who loves to lie with me
And tune his merry note,
Unto the sweet bird's throat;
Come hither, come hither, come hither.
Here shall he see
But winter and rough weather."
- William Shakespeare
The central idea of this poem is that to live a peaceful life, a life without stress and drama, then one should spend his life in the shelter of a tree where you will find peace, listening to bird call. I would suggest reading a good book would be the perfect accompaniment.
Under the Greenwood Tree is a small Independent Bookshop and Art Gallery that I came across on my recent stay at Sky House on Mount Tamborine - see here.
Located at 92 Main Western Road, North Tamborine, only minutes from popular Gallery Walk, this shop packs a punch. It's like Aladdin's Cave with treasures lining the bookshelves from floor to ceiling. It's the kind of place that gives bibliophiles a twitch.
There are books for Children, Young Adult Fiction, Biographies, Bestsellers, Non-Fiction and Classics lining the shelves. There are also journals and diaries that are just so beautiful that you'd like them even if you never wrote in them. You know the type, don't you?
Manager, Janene Gardner, knows the exact location of every book in her store. She has a vast knowledge of authors, present and past, and loves to share her passion and local information. I now know why there is a Judith Wright Walkway on the mountain. Do you?
Despite its size, Under The Greenwood Tree undertakes everything a much bigger store does with events such as book launches and book signings. Go here to keep up to date with these happenings.
Attached is a room that serves as a contemporary Art Gallery, art being another of Janene's passions. The exhibitions by both established and emerging artists are changed on a regular basis and include paintings, ceramics, sculpture and jewellery.
Whether you are spending a few days in the area or just enjoying a day trip to Mount Tamborine put Under The Greenwood Tree on the Must Do List. I guarantee you will be hard pressed to walk out without a new book and a spring in your step.
And yes, I managed to make a start on my Christmas shopping.
Under The Greenwood Tree is open from 10am till 4pm every day except Tuesdays, and has off street parking.
