I've been known to do some extraordinary things when on the hunt for a book for one of my collections. Like taking a Sunday drive and crossing the State border, as I did recently.

Picnic basket and water bottles packed into the back seat of the car we recently headed south, over the Queensland border to the Northern Rivers village of Clunes in New South Wales. In hilly country and with volcanic soils provided by nearby Mount Warning, the vegetation is lush and prime for coffee bean and macadamia growing.

There are numerous little villages dotted along the way and we stopped at a bakery for coffee and a stretch of the legs at Pottsville, a seaside village just south of the Queensland border.

Clunes is northeast of Lismore and to be honest, with a population of less than 600, it is smallish. Isn't this why we take drives to escape the hullabaloo of the Big Smoke?

Uncle Peter's Bookshop is located on the main drag, at 29 Main Street, Clunes. You can't miss it. There's a General Store, Garage, Beauty Salon and Uncle Peter's. Across the road is a delightful reserve with picnic tables that allow you to enjoy your picnic lunch amongst the beauty of nature: green trees, fresh air and bird calls.

has been operating since 1997 and since 2014 in the current location.

The store occupies an old house which is welcoming in appearance. There are chairs outside to rest upon, garden boxes full of colour, as well as onsite parking.

Let's cut to why we are here in the first place, shall we?

The shop holds about 20,000 books across a range of categories. There is a large fiction section, arranged alphabetically by author, which includes crime fiction, science fiction and literature, paperbacks and hardbacks, first editions and reading copies. Other categories include Art, Architecture, Photography, Craft, Australiana, Biography, History, Science, Technical, Health, Travel, Antarctic, Aviation, Mountaineering, Cooking, Sport, Military, Reference, True Crime, Philosophy, Animals, Gardening, Myths, New Age, Children's, Poetry, Drama, Humour and Classics.

Twenty thousand books! You know what this bibliophile really likes? Despite so many preloved books, they don't seem to have that dusty old book smell. You know the smell that I mean?

Of course, I found something to rehome and my friend purchased some delightful greeting cards as well as some local arts and crafts.

My tip for this coming summer is to move out of your comfort zone and discover somewhere new, somewhere you've never been before. I did and had a wonderful day.
