The word "Umina" was derived from the
Aboriginal word meaning 'place of sleep'. This is indeed a sleepy place, outside of the school holidays.
Umina Beach has two sections, South-Western section a North Eastern section.
Known for its strong rips and tides, swimming between the flags is important on these beaches. Both beaches host their own Surf Life Saving Club.
Entrance to Ocean Beach, Umina
The North Eastern section also known as Ocean Beach is host to Ocean beach surf life saving club (S.L.S.C.), which was first formed in 1922. Ocean Beach S.L.S.C. is the oldest surf club on the Central Coast and one of the strongest surf clubs in NSW across both Surf Lifesaving competition and patrols.
Umina Beach is a popular holiday location for Sydneysiders as it is a relatively short 88 km drive or 87 minutes by car, the long sandy beach is one of the Central Coast's most popular beaches for families, ideal for swimming and occasional surfing opportunities.
There are a lot of accommodation opportunities along this stretch of coastline, ranging from
camping and holiday parks to
5 star hotels.
This area makes a great day trip out from the Northern Beaches, a short 40 minute ferry ride and you'll think you're on holiday!
