Izakaya is an informal style of Japanese cuisine traditionally for men to drink saki with snacks after work. With our workforce changes over the years this style of casual Japanese dining has evolved with the times. We visited Umii in Drummoyne not knowing anything about the restaurant other than it being new to our local area. Umii is next door to Ocean Foods, a well known local seafood restaurant that has won many awards.
We were glad we chose Umii Modern Izakaya because it is Japanese fusion cuisine well worth trying. Their brochure states "Japanese fusion cuisine that will excite your mind and your mouth beyond your imagination." Well I'm here to tell you this statement is no exaggeration. I can still taste the flavours as I write this.
The food is fresh and presented with flair, the waiters are attentive and eager to please and, having only been opened a little over a month, the ambience is clean and classy. The look of the restaurant has a slight rustic feel with rope and subdued lighting yet is modern and comfortable. Even the music being played didn't overpower us, we were talking not shouting at each other.
The quality of the Wagyu is so good it just melts in your mouth.
The menu has so much to choose from, and even though some dishes are quite pricey, the servings are large enough to share. One dish we shared was the Wagyu Yakiniku - slices of Wagyu served with a charcoal pot. When the dish is served the waiter explains how to use the traditional pot along with the salts and spices. The quality of the Wagyu beef was excellent, we savoured every piece.
An extensive menu means we will be going back for more.
Other dishes we shared were Prawn Gyozo, Tempura Salmon, sushi rolls, salmon skewers, a very flavoursome fried rice and a generous selection of sashimi. Three of us had dessert, a 'smashed pavlova gelato with black sesame wafer'. Honestly, by the time we walked out we were truly full and satisfied. Price wise it's not the cheapest way to dine but if you want a true foodie experience then grab your friends and head on down to Lyons Road Drummoyne. I'm sure if Umii can keep up this standard it will win awards just like their famous neighbour, Ocean Foods.
There is one small negative I have to mention, I couldn't have coffee with my dessert because their coffee machine wasn't working. I'm sure this little technical hitch will be fixed by the time we dine there again.
