They say the Umfolozi Park, is the oldest game reserve in South Africa and is the only park under formal conservation in KwaZulu Natal and where the big five can be seen. This is the park where past Zulu kings have hunted. The Park covers some 96 000 hectares and contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora.
On our first day in the park we participated in a game drive. My expectations were high and excitement levels higher. I was amused by the large shotgun carried by the co rider on our vehicle - that was until I saw the first Rhino up close and personal, and then I understood why he was there.
Our accommodation was provided by Emdoneni Lodge, which offered an intimate and comfortable three Star chalet, rondavels were also available. From our rooms we were able to watch wildlife roaming the countryside totally oblivious to us as voyeurs.
Game parks are a fantastic way to view and appreciate South African animals in the wild, the income they generate assists in supporting the local native people and provides income towards important vetenary care.
