Three days of literature, food, film & great conversations

One of the best literary festivals in the world, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival Perth (UWRF), returns to The Rechabite from 21-23 October 2022. Tickets are now on sale for this unique showcase of celebrated Indonesian, Singaporean, Ukrainian and Australian writers and artists.

The jam-packed three-day festival offers WA audiences a cultural fusion experience like no other with engaging literary events, unique culinary experiences, film screenings and great conversations!

Now in its second year, UWRF Perth is the result of an exclusive partnership between Writing WA and the world-renowned Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, which has run for almost 20 years.

Writing WA CEO Sharon Flindell said the 2022 Perth program was rich in flavour and diversity. "We know there's a real appetite now for events that are truly immersive experiences that bring us together and teach us more about each other," she said.

"The UWRF Perth program will feature panel sessions that dive into subjects as diverse as international surf culture, human rights, writing about trauma and the human experience of war.

Some of the festival highlights include:

  • A Taste of Paon - A Special Literary Lunch prepared by Michelin-trained Executive Chef Wayan Kresna Yasa and featuring two Miles Franklin authors, Jennifer Down and Josephine Wilson, in conversation with Gillian O'Shaughnessy.

  • When the Camera Stopped Rolling film screening of Jane Castle's award-winning documentary about her trailblazing mother, Australian filmmaker, Lilias Fraser. The remarkable documentary explores her mother's legacy and their relationship using their deep archive of stunning imagery.

  • Cooking with Wayan, a special event with Executive Chef Wayan Kresna Yasa, who will demonstrate how to prepare selected dishes from his recently published cookbook Paon: Real Balinese Cooking.

  • Beacon of Hope: The Human Experience of Conflict with Max Rosochinsky and Oksana Maksymchuk, who fled Ukraine right before the outbreak of the war and Hassan Al Nawwab, an award-winning Iraqi poet who came to Australia to escape Saddam Hussein's oppressive regime. They speak with Natalie D-Napoleon to share the human experience of war and conflict, offering a remarkable window into this global crisis.

  • Comparing Notes Indonesian children's and YA author Reda Gaudiamo, the creator of the very popular 'Na Willa' stories and Yawuru writer/illustrator Brenton E. McKenna, the creator of the equally popular 'Ubby' series of graphic novels will come together to compare notes with Bianca Breen regarding their experiences crafting stories for young adults.
