For the past twenty years, The tiny country village of Tyalgum has been hosting a Classical Music Festival each Spring. A range of excellent musicians are chosen to perform in the Tyalgum Hall and St.Johns Anglican Church and this pretty town becomes a vibrant, buzzing, happening place over the three days of the event.
The festival started when founders, Carmel Kaine and John Willison, noticed all the cute halls in the district like Crystal Creek, and Chillingham and thought it would be nice to have concerts in them. When John first heard someone playing music in the Tyalgum Hall, he discovered that it had " a natural, warm, reverberant acoustic" with the timber beams perfectly breaking up the tinny sound reflecting off the corrugated iron roof.
They invited six fellow musicians to perform with them in July 1990, and fifty people turned up to appreciate their music. So, the following year, the Festival was launched and has grown year by year, to the world class event it is today.
This year marks the 21st Anniversary, and will be held on Friday, September the 7th till Sunday, September the 9th .Along with all the fine musicians playing, on the Saturday night, there will be a fashion parade which will present a collaboration between two fine cellists and a local, unique fashion designer.
Chandra Ellis, from
Apsara Lifestyle Boutique in Murwillumbah, uses exquisite, natural fabrics from India and also recycled materials, to prepare beautiful, one of a kind creations that stand out from the usual.
At the beginning of Saturday night 7.30pm session, entitled Blue Silence, Chandra's models will grace the stage like divine floral goddesses, accompanied with improvised music by cellists, David Pereira and
Katherine Philp .
The fashions will be followed by a Classical Music concert featuring David Pereira and pianist Timothy Young.
Concert founder Carmel, describes the audiences at Tyalgum to be "attentive, respectful and appreciative". Classical Music is definitely alive and well in the hands of some of the finest musicians available.
Also at Tyalgum, over the course of the weekend, will be The Caldera art exhibition and artists in residence, where you can view the works being created, nature walks and a spring fair on the Sunday, which includes eco talks and a cultural program with local dancers and musicians.
The Spring Fair is held in the grounds of Tyalgum School and is a free event. The Classical Music concerts at Tyalgum Hall and St. John's Church range in price from $25 to $50, with pre booked student tickets at $15. To attend every event over the three days the cost is $275. Camping is available at the Showground.
