Is it silly to be stocking up on your navy strength gin in these days of stock-piling? Perhaps not.

I love stories of yesteryear and the story of navy strength gin stretches back many centuries. In fact, it was the 18th century when it was legislated by The Royal Navy that every ship on the high seas was required to have a certain amount of gin on-board. Now you might think this would make for jolly sailing but actually, it was used to fight illness and disease which was rife on-board.

As they sailed from port to port, the stock of gin varied considerably with a lot watered down. To counter this, the Officers onboard would test is the gin was of acceptable quality. They would mix the gin with gunpowder and set alight. If the flame burns clear, it was considered acceptable, meaning it was 57% proof or more.

We are seeing a revival of gin and recently some new navy strength gins coming onto the market. As the story goes, to be classified navy strength it must be 57.1% Acl/Vol or over.

After hearing this story and being partial to gin, I went on the hunt for a navy strength gin. I found a boutique producer called Two Accents that produces a range of gins, including the Two Accents Navy Strength Gin.

With a fancy tonic and a hint of cucumber, I poured my nip of Two Accent's gin over ice with a dash of lime. I enjoyed the smooth balance and flavour with the hit of warm spices on the palate. It blended perfectly with the cucumber and lime tonic. A bonus is certainly the thought I am warding off any ill health!

Time to kick back and enjoy the story and the gin!
