Lovers of guitar will have heard of Mark Sholtez, an Australian singer songwriter who broke into the American music scene seven years ago, becoming the first Australian to be signed to the prestigious jazz label Verve. His albums have since topped the ARIA jazz and blues charts and he has toured with artists including Diana Krall, George Benson, Jamie Cullum and Sting.

Mark has produced three albums, Real Street, Love Me for the Cool and The Distance Between Two Truths and in 2007, his song from Love Me for the Cool won an APRA for Most Performed Jazz Work. You can hear and download samples of his music from his Myspace Page .

Mark has transitioned from his original piano based album to playing the guitar, as on tour his hotel rooms were not equipped with pianos and he found himself practising his songs on guitar instead. While tagged with the jazz label, his music is not strictly jazz, but his mellow style can't really be placed into any other musical category such as pop, rock, country or classical.

This June, Mark will be performing with fellow guitarist Bruce Woodward in a twilight concert at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, on Wednesday 12 June at 6pm in the USQ Arts Theatre, where he is occasional guest lecturer and inspires students studying song writing.

Bruce Woodward is currently lecturer in guitar at the University of Southern Queensland and is known for his distinctive playing and unique voice on the guitar. He is a graduate of both the Western Australian and Queensland Conservatories and has performed at many Festivals and events including the Queensland Biennial Festival of Music, Pinnacles and the Valley Fiesta. Bruce has also been a member of a number of groups, notably The View from Madeleine's Couch, Cubit, and Dr. T. His playing and arranging is used on recordings by several Queensland artists and has been broadcast on radio and TV. Mark and Bruce have been collaborating for the past ten years and have presented a number of concerts together.

At this concert they plan to perform a mix of Mark's original songs and reworkings of modern classics that have had an influence on their musical development, such as Bob Dylan's You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome and U2's All I Want Is You. Also making their debut at the concert will be some of the songs from Mark's current album project.

In this cooler weather, settle in for a Wednesday evening of heart-warming songs and rich harmonies at the University in Toowoomba. You can book tickets online , or by calling 4631 1111. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $16 for concessions, $14 for students and for $9 for children.
