Nueva Salsa provided a tantalising taste on February 4 of what's to come for the next three Upper Reach Winery twilight concerts in the Swan Valley.

With the sun gently sinking behind the vines a crowd of just over 300 people settled themselves on the lawn, rolling out picnic blankets and baskets and sipping on glasses of Upper Reach wine.

The big band salsa sound of Nueva Salsa with its Cuban influenced cha cha and samba music had the crowd quickly on its feet.

It was a perfect day for the concert with not a cloud in the sky and a cool breeze blowing, although winemaker Derek Pearse confessed to some anxiety earlier in the week when the Swan River broke its banks and flooded some of his vines.

Crisis was averted with the help of an industrial pump and other than a large, newly formed pond on the property, concert goers were none the wiser.

People looking for a slightly more up-market experience had booked themselves in for dinner at Broads Restaurant with views overlooking the picnickers below and the big glass doors thrown open to the let the energetic sounds of Nueva Salsa drift in.

This was the first of four Upper Reach concerts to be held this summer celebrating vintage which is now under way in the vineyard.

It's the 14th year of the Upper Reach twilight picnic concerts. Next up on Saturday, February 18 is popular concert regular Adam Hall returning with the Soul Playboys with music from Stevie Wonder, Prince and Michael Jackson and some more modern sounds of Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce thrown in.

Adam is back again on Saturday, March 4, this time with the Velvet Playboys reprising their first appearance at Upper Reach 11 years ago.

The Velvet Playboys repertoire is rooted in the jazz and rhythm and blues music of the 40s and 50s from artists such as Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, Sammy Davis Junior, Harry Connick Junior, Jackie Wilson, Chuck Berry and The Blues Brothers.

The final concert of the year will be on Saturday, March 18, with Straight Ahead Big Band, an 18-piece outfit playing big band classics.

If the eight-piece sound of Nueva Salsa is anything to go by, by the time Straight Ahead gets on stage the vineyard will be well and truly dancing.

The big band features the classics of the 1940s Swing Era through to modern swing, Latin, funk and blues performing the music of people like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble and Dean Martin.

The concerts have a warm intimate atmosphere with many people coming in groups of friends, sharing a picnic and watching the sun go down before they hit the dance floor.

Tickets for each of the upcoming concerts are $39 per person with free admission for children under four and $18 for five to 17-year-olds and are available from the website .
Upper Reach Winery is at 77 Memorial Avenue, Baskerville.
