Having started its life as Chateau Tanunda, in 1914, the historic building on the corner of Renmark Avenue and Twenty Third Street is now home to a distillery.

The building itself exudes character and charm. The original, huge concrete wine storage bins, old copper stills and chunky timber beams are softened by the recent addition of shiny, rose-coloured copper pipes and lots of sparkling glass.

The bar offers a bountiful array of prime spirits, in different varieties, of gin, whiskey, vodka, rum and brandy.

A collection of pretty garnishes are on hand nearby to add complement to drinks.

The distillery offers a range of tasting experiences, tours and mixing masterclasses which makes it an educational establishment, don't you think?

I chose to learn more about Gin on my recent visit and chose a 'Heart and Soul' Gin flight as my practical experiment. I spent a salubrious time comparing and contrasting the aromas and tastes of spices and botanicals with, and without, the addition of ice, tonic and garnishes. Juniper, mandarin, lime, cardamom, vanilla and honey were just some of the piquant flavours I enjoyed.

Whiskey, Rum and Brandy are also available to taste as well as a selection of craft beer.

Twenty Third Street offers gourmet, wood-oven pizzas and light snacks, as well as a full dinner menu incorporating spirit flavours, local indigenous ingredients, international influences and family-friendly choices.

My tasting-flight partner ordered Halloumi Bruschetta with cherry tomatoes, capers and olives on chargrilled Turkish bread.

I ordered Pan-Seared Squid with chorizo, cherry tomatoes, capers and chilli.

Both dishes were chosen from the 'Something Light' menu and cost $15 and $16 respectively. We expected something along the lines of bar snacks and were surprised by the generous serves that arrived.

Despite feeling quite satiated after my 'Something Light' option I decided to further indulge in education and learn about a Turkish Delight Cocktail.

I watched as Riverland Rose Vodka was shaken with Creme de Cacao and ice then poured over a slice of Turkish Delight. As I prepared to enjoy the subtle flavour and rosy tint of rose petals I was filled with gratitude that I had been gifted such a love for learning.
