Twenty One Café and Groceries is located in the NewActon Precinct, just a few minutes from Canberra's CBD. This environmentally conscious precinct is an interesting area to explore, with eco apartments with 8 star energy ratings, community vegetable plots and a small bicycle repair shop - for residents and locals who have reduced their carbon imprint and just own a bicycle. There is also an art gallery, movie theatre, hotels, award winning restaurants, modern cafes and the internationally acclaimed Nishi Building , which has recycled tyres formed into "tree roots" which twist and wind around the bottom of the building.

In contrast to these modern and cutting-edge establishments, Twenty One Café and Groceries is the most casual café of the precinct - so casual in fact, that it is combined with the local supermarket. There is something very welcoming about this café however - although it is new, it has a homely and old-fashioned interior, making it an easy place to relax and unwind in the NewActon Precinct.

This cafe and grocer is in a handy location for local office workers, residents and guests of the number of hotels nearby. It is surprisingly large, with a cosy couch and wide wooden tables which can sit four to six people. As you walk in further, there are little nooks to relax and enjoy breakfast, lunch or a sweet treat with a coffee. There is a real community feeling about this family-owned cafe and grocer, with locals popping in to say hi and the staff acknowledging people by name. Another feature we enjoyed about sitting in the café, was the feeling of being "sunken" below street level. When you look up out of the high windows all you see are the trees and skies above, not the busy streetscape out the front.

Food-wise there is an extensive and tasty breakfast menu as well as lunch specials which include risotto, soups, pasta and salads. There is also a long, ready-made food cabinet where you can pick up a gourmet roll, toasty, handmade sausage roll, pastie or pie - perfect for a quick and easy lunch on the run.

Twenty One Café and Groceries is like a comforting home away from home. It has cosy areas to sit, friendly staff, familiar food and even groceries you can pick up on the way home or take back to the hotel. When you do leave, there are also plenty of things to see and do around the environmentally sustainable precinct. Why not wander around and admire the public works of art which can be founding lurking on street corners, or towering over you as you walk by.

Just down the road from the café is a walkway and bridge over a busy highway, to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. Take a walk along the lakeside, book a tour with Lake Burley Griffin Cruises or stop in at Westside Acton Park shipping container village for a delicious lunch from one of the food trucks. Twenty One Café and Groceries is located in such a central spot, that once you park the car (and pay for parking), you can be just like a local and walk everywhere you need to go. Completely carbon free.
