TV Inspired Christmas Party Games

When I was much younger, Boxing Day used to be spent at my grandparents house and we would all play Scrabble. It was obligatory even for those who didn't like it. Boxing Day later migrated to my house, and since we don't have a Scrabble board that tradition ended (to my mum's relief).
We played Scrabble because none of us were really party game sort of people (the gathering was made up of one child, two adults, and several seniors, so not much of a surprise), but one of the highlights for us was (and still is) to watch Christmas TV specials, such as sitcoms, that feature characters playing a whole host of absurd games.
If watching these games is hilarious, I can only imagine how much fun they are to take part in. So I have compiled a list of party games that can be played on Christmas, Boxing Day, or New Year, that have been inspired - or rather pinched, to put less euphemistically - by the entertainment box in our living room.
1. Dancing Competition
BBC One will be airing a Strictly Come Dancing Special on Christmas Day, but if you would rather be on the dance floor than watching it, then why not host your own competition. The living room is hardly going to be big enough for full out ballroom, but I'm sure everyone can must up some disco moves.
2. Make Your Own Jokes
In the 1970s sitcom,
The Good Life, self-sufficient Tom and Barbera make their own Christmas crackers, along with groan worthy jokes. Nowadays you can buy 'make your own crackers' sets, and write your own jokes for them. Here's one I made up:
Q: Where do garden ornaments go for adventure?
A: The great ungnome.
3. Balloon Race
Tom and Barbera also made up a silly balloon race. In teams of two, you race to roll your balloon all the way round the body of your teammate, using only your forehead as a guide.
4. Charades
Charades is a classic party game, but never is it funnier than in
The Vicar of Dibley, when dimwit Alice gets confused between
Jaws and jars.
5. Brussel Sprout Contest
One way to get rid of the brussel sprouts is to have a competition. Who ever can eat the most in a sitting (after the main meal) is the winner.
