When you arrive at Turner's Bakehouse in Mernda, it's easy to imagine this being a hub for travellers on a gravel road over 100 years ago. The Turner bakery was originally opened in 1892. For a long time, this cafe served has a residence but has reopened as a boutique bakery with an English garden setting in 2010.

The bakery was on-sold in 2013 by Matt and Lizzie and they now open the bakery everyday. Those who have been there before will notice they offer some of the popular items and also now have a new menu. I love the fact that everything is handmade on site including bread, pastries, pies and cakes. If the wind is right this will be evident as you walk through the old gate. The bakery produces delicious gourmet pies from $5.50 to $6.50.

The new owners have acquired a liquor license for beer and wine and they serve high tea, which includes ribbon sandwiches, bakehouse scones, mini sweets, truffles and selected loose leaf tea for $39 per head. It's popular though, so bookings are essential.

The Turner cafe is the busiest on Saturdays and Sundays for lunch. Just introduced on Friday nights Between 5.30 and 8.30 is gourmet burger night, eat in or takeaway. I know what I'm having for dinner next Friday!

This is a lovely setting for lunch, morning or afternoon tea. There is outdoor furniture is under the veranda or under a well established trees. If you prefer dine indoors. Every room of the old residence is now open for dining part. Some of the rooms have only one table for private dining and charming open fireplaces.

The most frequently purchased item at this bakery is sourdough bread that is cooked on site in the wood fire Scott oven. I rather like a sourdough and this one is cooked to perfection. It's very crisp and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It needs nothing more than butter to make a filling snack. It's truly hard to resist this sourdough that left a delicious taste in my mouth.

When Catherine served me she said that she has often eating two thirds of a loaf of sourdough all by herself. I laughed out loud when she said that. I can imagine doing that with a cheesecake but it took great self control not to beat her record tonight.

My only recommendation for this bakery would be that they limit the number of sweets offered. How is one meant to choose from so many yummy cheesecakes, fresh chocolate éclairs, cakes, lemon tarts and gluten free options?
