Valentine's Day is just around the corner, so instead of dragging your better half around for the same old pursuits, try something different.
Traditionally, it is expected that the man in the relationship will plan and pay for everything on Valentine's Day, so I am actively encouraging women in heterosexual relationships to go ahead and swap roles. Pick the place, pay for the cabs, food and drinks, and I promise you will feel more independent and more equal in your relationship.
For same-sex relationships: head out for lunch at a restaurant you've never tried before (I never thought about trying tapas, but now I'm addicted), go to a theme park, or have a spa day together. The standard rigmarole of finding a restaurant and buying flowers can get old after several years.
For the men in this gender-role swap, baking cookies or a meal for your lady is a thoughtful and caring gesture. Reversing traditional gender roles or simplifying the events of the day will really help change Valentine's Day for the better, and make a change from the humdrum tradition. And remember: telling somebody how you feel is appropriate all year round, it's not just reserved for one single day of the year.
