The annual Turkish Pazar is on at the Queen Victoria Market so grab your magic carpet and get ready for a ride into another culture.
Pazar is a Turkish word for market so in some ways this is a market within our larger market.
Part of Victoria Market will be transformed into a Turkish tea garden for the occassion.
Turks drink lots of tea and in Turkey tea gardens are more popular than bars. They are places to gather and catch up with friends and places to play games such as backgammon.
As well as tea you can enjoy Turkish coffee culture and have the fun experience of having your fortune told from the grounds.
You will also be able to taste typical foods such as simit (crusty rings of bread covered with sesame seeds), doner kebab and gözleme (savoury pancakes) as well as finding out where to buy the ingredients in Melbourne.
Stalls will stock Turkish handcrafts, jewellery and ceramics.
There will be Turkish story tellers, a sing along with visiting Turkish performers Sitki Akin and Mihriban Turkmen Guzel. You can also watch the colourful and spectacular military precision of the Mehteran, the first Ottoman style marching band outside Turkey.
See traditional Turkish arts and crafts many of which are beautifully hand painted.
You can even get information on how to plan a trip to Turkey
This special market is on the 23 March 2014,
What an assortment of Turkish delight!
