Tumeke Taita - stand proud in Taita. This annual festival has become an important date in the activities of the Taita community and surrounding suburbs as well. It is getting better by the year and more popular. I think most residents will come down and have a look and support their community sometime in the morning or afternoon.
While it is historically better known as the first planned state housing area in New Zealand in the early 1950's - Taita was a model for the rest of the country, it was the northernmost part of the old Lower Hutt borough town, where stage coaches left for the hinterland in the Wairarapa in the 19th century. There was also a large Maori settlement on the bend of the Hutt River.
