Josie Charming a Customer While Jamie Works

Tum Tum the Halloumi Van has pretty much been in hibernation since Autumn and I had only heard about it recently. But I have been keen to tastes the exotic flavours promised in their kefte and halloumi version of a yiros. I'd even gone so far as buying some halloumi cheese for me to barbeque, but the weather has been too cold to bother with the BBQ until recently.

Back of Tum Tum Showing Menus

Finally my "Like" on their Facebook page paid off, and I saw in my news feed that Tum Tum would be out on Kintore Avenue. Worrying that I might be too late I checked train timetables because parking in that area is very competitive. No go - only 1 miserable train every hour on the weekend.

Jumping in my car I broke most road rules to get there, and broke a few more in a loading zone as I headed over to meet these creative cooks. Josie and Jamie were having a quiet moment and were happy to chat, letting me in on a few secrets about cooking halloumi to its best, and lamenting about rocket being unavailable to give a pepper kick in the salad.

Retro Warmer that was Sustainably Saved

I watched a few workers from nearby businesses make off with their pretty packages of donuts, and suddenly my stomach was growling as I smelled the spicy kefta. Jamie showed me their salvaged retro warmer while Josie busied herself at the cooker.

Josie explained that they don't use any garlic in the yoghurt as it can cause social problems for office workers, but a little is brushed on while cooking. The kefte is flavoured with fresh rosemary, mint and some pepper for spiciness.

Great Smells Rom the Kefte and Halloumi Cooking

The wrap is finally rolled quite tightly, keeping the contents in place and ready to be sampled.

Everything in Place

Quickly darting back to my car, I rapidly devoured the kefte wrap. My only complaint? There was too much for me to finish it, as it hadn't been long since breakfast.

But the food was delicious! The tender spicy kefte flavour was well balanced by the slightly chewy golden halloumi, with an occasional fresh burst of mint flavour arriving when least expected. The lettuce was crisp, and the tomato tasty.

The conclusion? Highly recommended.

While not a big fan of sweeter food, I did give the donuts a try too. I liked the ball shape which is more elegantly eaten than the traditional variety, and the cinnamon was a nice delicate addition to the donut. Result - another recommendation.

Josie and Jamie have other employment, so you will probably only catch them on weekends, although they are available sometimes for special functions at other times.

Their Facebook page currently has 218 Likes - add yours there and find them when they pop up next. If you like Greek food it will be worth the wait!

Love it Dave! Your article popped up in my email, and I clicked over to their Facebook page before I had a chance to read it. Then I was out the door in a second, heading down to Kintore Ave.

Got home, and sat down to read your article with lamb and halloumi wrap, and some greek doughnuts, in my hand.

Glad you got it up nice and quick, otherwise I would have missed the van.

I had their grilled chicken halloumi wrap when they were on HIndmarsh Sq. with Bikes SA and Churroz!
Didn't know they did Loukoumades too. Oh My God!
Their wraps were great. Fresh as. Quick and great service with a smile. But Loukoumades, really. I missed out.

OMG you know what - this has made my day!

I can't wait to try this out! Haloumi is something I crave, but I've never quite found the one that does it for me.

Sadly Josie and Jamie have announced on Facebook that they are travelling but will no longer selling their delicious food.

A sad loss for Adelaide!
