When I first moved to Sydney a couple of decades ago, I would see what was available in last-minute ticket offers and give whatever there was a go. My adventurous spirit led me to watch Wuthering Heights at the Genesian Theatre, which was my first memory of watching a play. I had never read the book nor known what the story was about. However, I was so drawn to the vivid presentation of the characters and intensity of the play on stage that I still have fond memories of the experience.

In Adelaide, we have some fantastic theatres that give both theatre lovers and novice theatregoers a chance to enjoy this art form. This month, we are in for a treat with True West, a play by American playwright Sam Shepard, showing at the Bakehouse Theatre. The play premiered in San Francisco in 1980. It was a finalist for the Prize for Drama in 1983 and has been put on stage all over the world over the years.

True West explores the relationship between two brothers who live completely different lives but unexpectedly cross paths at their mother's home. This 2 hour play with a 15 minute interval will transport the audience to a different world and time just outside Los Angeles. Given that we are not allowed to travel overseas, a play that goes back in time and somewhere across the Pacific Ocean will be a welcoming entertainment for those who have itchy feet.

Our local talents Marko Siklich and Robbie Greenwell co-star as the two brothers, with Rick Mills in the role of a charming Hollywood Producer. Caroline Mignone is both directing and playing the role of Mom of the two boys. What do we expect? Fights, laughter, sweetness, emotions? Anything you can think of between close family members. You will find it.

Tickets are $20 each. There are only 5 shows. The opening night Wednesday 14 July is already sold out. The following sessions are still available:

Thursday, 15 July 2021 - 6:30pm
Friday, 16 July 2021 - 6:30pm
Saturday, 17 July 2021 - 6:30pm
