Trouble (2019), also marketed as Dog Gone Trouble, is a family-friendly animated film directed by Kevin Johnson. Produced by 3QU Media and Vanguard Animation, the movie centres on a pampered dog, Trouble, who is thrust into the real world after the death of his wealthy owner, Mrs. Vanderwhoozie. The narrative follows Trouble’s journey of self-discovery as he faces challenges, forms bonds, and evades the clutches of greedy relatives. Featuring a stellar voice cast, including Big Sean, Lucy Hale, and Betty White, the film delivers a blend of comedy, adventure, and heart-warming moments.

The film begins with Trouble (voiced by Sean 'Big Sean' Anderson) living a life of luxury under the care of Mrs. Vanderwhoozie (voiced by Betty White). However, her sudden death leaves Trouble orphaned, and her fortune becomes the target of her unscrupulous relatives, Claire (voiced by Marissa Winokur) and Norbert (voiced by Joel McHale). To inherit the wealth, they must first retrieve Trouble, who accidentally escapes into the outside world.

Trouble’s journey introduces him to a cast of eclectic characters, including street-smart animals like Rousey (voiced by Pamela Adlon), a pit bull, and Gizmo (voiced by Damon Wayans Jr), a quirky whippet. Along the way, Trouble learns survival skills and the value of genuine relationships. Meanwhile, Claire and Norbert employ a hapless animal tracker, Thurman Sanchez (voiced by Wilmer Valderrama), to recover Trouble. The subplot intertwines Zoe (voiced by Lucy Hale), an aspiring singer, who eventually adopts Trouble, symbolizing a new chapter in his life.

The climax occurs when Trouble is confronted by Claire and Norbert, leading to a resolution where justice prevails, and Trouble finds a true home. The story wraps up with Zoe using her newfound fortune to improve her community, highlighting themes of kindness and community-building.

Trouble’s evolution from a pampered pet to an independent, resourceful dog mirrors a classic coming-of-age tale. His experiences reflect the importance of adaptability and personal growth when faced with unforeseen challenges.

The greed of Claire and Norbert contrasts sharply with the genuine care shown by characters like Zoe and James, the loyal butler. This juxtaposition underscores the value of sincerity over material wealth.

The soundtrack, including songs performed by Jason Mraz and Big Sean, blends contemporary pop with light-hearted tunes, complementing the film’s tone.

Critics provided mixed reviews. While Trouble was praised for its humour and voice performances, it faced criticism for its formulaic plot and lack of originality. Notably, the film’s release was overshadowed by its underwhelming box office performance, earning just under $14 million worldwide. Some critics highlighted Betty White’s role, especially posthumously, as a poignant aspect of the film.

Trouble is a light-hearted, family-oriented film that delivers wholesome entertainment with a touch of humour and life lessons.
