It was a very long time ago. When life was 'old school' and you actually went to the shop to buy the Saturday morning paper rather than read it on your iPad. I purchased a copy of 'The Saturday Age' and a DVD fell out. It was the finalists of the short film festival
"Tropfest 2007". I popped it into the DVD player, unprepared for the rollercoaster of emotions about to visit. I laughed out loud, grimaced and got tears in my eyes as the short films rolled by. Ever since, I've been a convert of short film. This year there will be a free screening of
Tropfest 2013 on the big screen at the
Sidney Myer Music Bowl on
Sunday February the 17th from 11am. Punters are encouraged to bring a picnic and relax on the lawn.
At
Tropfest you really do get to see the best of the best. Anyone in Australia can submit a short film but there's a rigorous process to select the finalists. The quality of films chosen is outstanding. Over the years
Tropfest has launched the careers of many well known names in the Australian film and television industry including Joel Edgerton, Rob Carlton and Sam Worthington. You can see the trailer for
Tropfest 2013 here .
It wouldn't be
Tropfest if it didn't have a wacky twist. Each year all entries must contain a Tropfest Signature Item (TSI). This year the TSI is BALLOON. The 16 finalists whose films will be shown at the screening will be announced on the 5th of February. The winner will be decided by a stellar panel of film aficionados in Sydney on the 17th of February.
So what's stopping you? If you want to be immersed in the very best of Australian short films, pack your picnic rug and head along.
