Did you think the Sundance Film Festival or the one in Cannes was the world's largest for short films? Wrong. It's Tropfest and Tropfest comes to Midland this December 7th.

The City of Swan has entered a partnership with teh Film and Television Institue ( FTI ) to bring the exciting, free, festival to Midland.

Tropfest began in 1993 when 200 people crowded into Sydney's Tropicana Cafe to watch filmmaker John Polson's mockumentary Surry Hills 902 Spring Roll.

Since when Tropfest has gone on to become the vast cultural event we now know, with a more than 150,000 audience for last year's spectacular.

Paul Bodlovich, CEO of FTI commented: "The new venue will see the WA arm of Tropfest grow from strength to strength, with live entertainment, food stalls and other activities leading up to the screening of 16 astounding short films, this year's Tropfest is certain to be our biggest and best yet."

As much a music festival as a film screening with this year's WA event being fortunate enough to have songwriter, singer and guitarist Katy Steele, front person for rock band Little Birdy performing.

Of the sixteen finalists in the short film category (maximum length seven minutes) only one is by a Western Australian company. This is Fixed by Wavebreaker/SAE Institute. Jemimah, aged five, is desperate for her dog, Tilly, to have puppies. When she learns her parents plan to have Tilly desexed, Jemimah embarks on a quest to get Tilly pregnant.

City of Swan Mayor, Charlie Zannino, said; "The festival is a welcome addition to the growing list of annual arts and cultural events hosted by the City. Tropfest follows on from the huge success of the award winning Midlandia, an outpost venue for the Fringe World Festival held earlier this year."

Doors to this free event open at 5pm with Katy Steele performing at 5.30pm prior to the Tropfest screening at 7pm.

Tropfest will be in the public space at the corner of Cale Street and The Crescent Midland. In addition to the films and music there will be food vans and a bar set to add atmosphere to the space.

Further details can be found on the Tropfest Facebook page .
