Brisbane Arts Theatre, located on Petrie Terrace, has a tradition of presenting comedic stage productions that the average Joe can connect with. Maybe an outcome of producing local writer's work? I love heading along to see their shows, and caught Stephen Vagg's Trivia, which runs until 20 April.
With two lead characters, and three supporting characters, Trivia shows us the lives of disenchanted thirty-somethings who are realising they don't have all the answers. We have Michaela, whose long-term relationship ended during her recovery from breaking both her legs, so she's single and looking (but not too desperate). Her life goal is to "start living life as in a Visa card ad". Her trivia partner-in-crime is Gary, an ex-lawyer who ditched the suits, now works in a video store, and who doesn't treat women very well. AJ is a sometimes-member of the trivia team, she's in a relationship with a man who keeps cheating on her. Aram is another sometimes-member of the team and he's trying to manage a long-distance relationship. And there's Ben, Michaela's ex-boyfriend, who thinks he's a nice guy, but we see that he's not quite right about that.
As a sometimes-disenchanted thirty-something, I loved that the play connected with some of the experiences I've had in my life. If you like the depiction of the trials and tribulations of friendships and relationships in such things as Bridget Jones, or He Died With A Felafel In His Hand, then you'll be laughing out loud in this play. So, grab a ticket and enjoy some local live theatre.
