Triplet Falls Bush walk is a 2km loop track in the heart of The Great Otway National Park. It is a beautiful trail that weaves through a rainforest filled with ferns, fungi and 300-year-old trees and features a waterfall and the remnants of an old timber mill.

The start of the track is signposted, with an information board on the types of flora and fauna to keep an eye out for during the walk.


Part-way along the track, the path splits into two, with the Little Aire Walking track veering off to the left (there are sign posts to make sure you stay on the correct track).

One of the parts I enjoyed most was the amazing range of fungi. There were a number of different mushrooms, along with other types of fungi, moss and lichen.


The walk itself is fairly easy and takes about an hour. The track is well-maintained, with wooden steps and metal mesh walkways. There are some steep sections and I'd recommend wearing shoes with good grip, as some of the sections were a bit slippery - particularly the moss-covered wood and even the metal mesh walkways.

There are handrails in some sections and a couple of seats, however, I wouldn't recommend the walk for people who may be unsteady on their feet and/or prone to falls.



Along the track, there are signs, which provide information on the trees, animals, plants and history of the area.



When the track runs arrives at the waterfall and there is a viewing platform, which provides a clear view of the falls. The old timber mill site is situated toward the end of the walk, between the waterfall and carpark. As the forest is so quiet, it's hard to imagine the activity and noise of the mill that was once there.



Overall, I found it was an enjoyable walk and would recommend it for anyone looking for a short walk in the Otways. I didn't get a chance to do the Little Aire walk, however if you're spending the day in the area, it may be worth including this 4.5km (2 hour) walk to see a bit more of the area.

If you're not a local, I'd also recommend staying for a few days in one of the nearby towns to give yourself a chance to explore the region. There are lots of other bush walks throughout the Great Otway National Park and the Otway Fly and is also nearby.

Carpark and Surrounds
Near the entrance to the carpark there is a toilet block with long-drop toilets and a rainwater tank for hand-washing. When I visited, the toilets were clean, well-maintained and fully stocked with toilet paper.

There are a couple of disabled car parking spaces and adjacent to the carpark is an area with a couple of picnic tables - perfect to sit down and have lunch after the walk.


What to bring:

Toilets: Yes - there are long-drop toilets, with a rainwater tank for hand-washing.

Wi-Fi/Phone Reception: I wasn't able to get any reception on my phone in the carpark or during the walk. I got reception again once I drove back up the road.

Getting there:
Triplet Falls Walk is just over 200km from Melbourne or 50km from Apollo Bay. If driving from Melbourne, head towards Colac, then Gellibrand. Take Phillips Track past the Otway Fly and turn down Youngs Creek Track (follow the 'Triplet Falls' signs).

Access to the the carpark and walk starting point is via a fairly steep, unsealed road, so it's a good idea to drive slowly, particularly if it has been raining heavily recently.

Cost: Free

Shade/Shelter: There is quite a bit of tree cover, however I'd recommend wearing a hat during summer and wet-weather gear if it's raining.

Camping Permitted? No. There is a sign advising that camping and sleeping in cars is not permitted.

Dogs Permitted? No
