The Article

I have written this article based on my experiences during a recent trip in China in late spring booked through Trip a Deal. I have written the article in five parts for a better reading.

I travelled with my partner and a group of six close friends that I had invited to share the experience of exploring China. Once we arrived at the airport in Beijing, we became part of a larger group totalling 36 people. We were to remain together for the entirety of the trip, boarding the same buses, staying in the same hotels and walking through the sites as a united group.

Embarking on this journey as part of a cohesive group allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the Chinese culture and experience the country's wonders in a more comprehensive manner. Having the support of my travel companions enhanced the overall experience and made navigating unfamiliar surroundings much more seamless. By sticking together as a group throughout the trip, we were able to share in the discoveries, observations, and reactions to this captivating country in a way that would not have been possible travelling individually.

Arriving in Beijing, we flew from Sydney to Guangzhou and from Guangzhou to Beijing.

We delved into the rich cultural heritage of the Shaolin Temple, where we witnessed the mesmerizing Kung Fu exhibition, and explored the Henan Museum, a repository of ancient Chinese artefacts.

My Recent Journey Through the Captivating Culture of China

During my journey in China, I have been thoroughly captivated by the country's rich cultural heritage and the remarkable ways it seamlessly blends the old and the new. From the moment I set foot in this dynamic nation, I have been immersed in an experience that has truly left a lasting impression.

The places I have visited with the tour group have been steeped in history and tradition, offering a fascinating glimpse into China's timeless allure. What has struck me most is how the cities maintain a remarkable level of cleanliness, with no more food vendors lining the streets. It is clear the government has made concerted efforts to ensure hygienic food practices and a tidy urban landscape.

One of the most noticeable changes I've observed is the shift away from the iconic push bikes that once defined China's landscape. Those have been largely replaced by cars, electric scooters, and an efficient public transportation system. Even the rickshaws, once a ubiquitous sight, now exist primarily as tourist attractions.

Today the pedicabs are waiting lined up for tourists, a different way to explore the old hutongs -narrow lanes- in the old part of the city of Beijing.

The bustling railway stations and airports I've encountered are a testament to China's modernization, designed to accommodate the thousands of people in constant motion across the country. However, one aspect that has caught me off guard is the pervasive presence of cigarette smoke in these hubs of activity, a stark contrast to the otherwise well-maintained environments. In China, cigarettes are remarkably affordable, making tobacco accessible to a wide range of people. As a result, the sight of people indulging in smoking is quite common throughout the country. Smoking has become deeply ingrained in Chinese culture, with social gatherings often accompanied by the ritual of lighting up. Unfortunately, the smoke often lingers in the air, making it a constant presence in public spaces.

In Beijing, a unique traffic management system has been implemented where cars with even-numbered license plates are only permitted to travel on even-numbered days of the week, and vice versa for odd-numbered plates. This innovative approach has helped to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in the capital city.

Furthermore, many large businesses in China have adjusted their starting times as an additional strategy to alleviate rush hour gridlock and improve air quality. By staggering work schedules, the volume of vehicles on the roads during peak hours has been significantly reduced.

The abundance of food available throughout my journey has been truly remarkable. The workers in eateries and food stalls have demonstrated impressive efficiency in preparing delectable dishes with remarkable speed. And the Chinese people, in general, have been exceptionally helpful, and eager to ensure a positive experience with my purchases.

Nestled in the heart of Beijing's old city, right outside Gulou East Street, lies a captivating and upscale shop. With its charming ambience, this establishment offers a delightful spectacle as the skilled artisans prepare delectable traditional sweets right before the eyes of eager customers.

To make the dining experience even more accessible, a few restaurants use translation apps that bridge the language gap between English and Mandarin. In the major cities, international chains like McDonald's, KFC, Starbucks, and Luckin Café offer familiar fare, albeit at Australian-level prices.

The familiar golden arches appear in the city of Hangzhou

One aspect that has particularly intrigued me is the family-run nature of many businesses. In these establishments, I've noticed how different members of the family contribute to the customer experience – one family member might provide the goods, another handles the payment, and a third offers the change. This collaborative approach highlights the tight-knit nature of Chinese entrepreneurship.

Within the Shaolin Temple Precinct, an ice cream vendor awaits, ready to serve you. As you approach, anticipate the smooth sliding of the freezer door, followed by another individual handling the transaction and, if needed, a separate person promptly providing you with any necessary change.

However, I've been warned to exercise caution when it comes to street vendors and untested food options. My guides have wisely advised me to stick to reputable, recommended establishments to ensure the safety and quality of my culinary experiences and avoid getting sick. It is recommended to drink only bottled water, and make sure not to drink the water offered in jugs and glasses in restaurants.

The tour includes organized shopping experiences, where I've had the opportunity to explore high-quality providers of jewellery, artefacts made of jade, silk, Terracotta Warriors, and other exceptional items. These encounters have also provided an insight into China's rich artistic and cultural traditions.

My journey through China has been a truly captivating and eye-opening experience. The country's remarkable blend of ancient heritage and modern progress, combined with the hospitality of its people, has left an indelible mark on me. It has been a great opportunity to have had the chance to immerse myself in this captivating culture.

A sculpture of Pixiu made in jade in the jade shop in Beijing. With the body of a lion and the wings of a dragon, Pixiu exudes strength, grace, and mystical allure. Revered for its auspicious powers, Pixiu is believed to attract wealth, ward off evil spirits, and bring prosperity to its fortunate owners. Its insatiable appetite for riches, combined with its ability to prevent wealth from flowing away, makes Pixiu an iconic symbol of abundance and financial stability.

My journey through China has been a transformative exploration of a country that effortlessly weaves together its rich history and vibrant modernity. From the ancient wonders that still stand tall to the bustling cities that pulse with energy. China has shared with us its traditions, cuisine, and its stories have enriched my understanding of this incredible nation.

I carry with me a profound appreciation for the harmonious coexistence of tradition and progress that defines this land. It has been great to immerse ourselves in its captivating culture and witness firsthand the remarkable achievements that have propelled China onto the global stage.
