If there's one thing that kids love doing it's climbing trees. Unfortunately, they usually aren't allowed to, which is a pity because tree climbing is great for kids. Climbing trees helps children to develop their co-ordination and strengthen their muscles. It gives them a chance to use their problem solving skills and their confidence is boosted by having the opportunity to challenge themselves. Of course it also gets them away from the computer and out into the fresh air.

I was really excited to discover that there is a way to let children climb some really big trees without having to worry about possible broken arms and legs. In fact tree climbing has so many benefits, I think us adults should get out and give it a go as well.

is a local business that gives people the opportunity to try rope and harness style tree climbing in many of the beautiful parks around Brisbane. Participants are given a short training session, and put into a helmet and safety harness, then hooked up to ropes in the tree.

A very basic description of the climbing technique is that it involves pushing up with your legs, then pulling down on a 'magic knot' with your hands. By doing this climbers are able to raise themselves up into the tree canopy.

When climbers reach a reasonable height, they are rewarded with the opportunity to relax in a tree top hammock or chair. This is a great motivator for children and really adds to the fun.

offer several different recreational tree climbing adventures and courses. A great way for children to start is with the Recreational Tree Climbing sessions that are organised by the Brisbane City Council as part of their Active Parks program. These 40 minutes sessions are offered once a month for children aged 8 and up, and the best thing is they are absolutely free. Parents are able to join in with these sessions as well, so why not pack a picnic lunch and make it a great family day out.

Looking for a different idea for a birthday party? can organise fun climbs for groups of 6 to 10 people. These sessions go for 3 hours, so participants will have lots of time to enjoy the exhilaration of being high in the canopy. I think this would be great for older children, teenagers and even adventurous adults.

For those who want to develop their climbing skills further, there are also three day courses available.

So, if you want to get a real buzz and get high without having to resort to illegal drugs, look no further than your local park and . This is a natural high that really is good for you.
