Fascinating, Informative and Free Fun For All The Family
Once upon a time, many years ago, tall sailing ships from Europe traversed the globe, trading in a treasure more priceless than gold fragrant and exotic spices from the Far East. Beginning in the 1500s and extending until the 1800s, the 'Age of Spice', as it came to be known, was a time of great worldwide exploration and discovery, spurred largely by a demand for spices back in Europe. Celebrating this romantic and adventurous era, the Art Gallery of Western Australia is holding a fascinating exhibition called 'Treasure Ships - Art in the Age of Spices' from October until late January, which will examine the complex cultural and artistic interactions between European merchants and the cultures they sought to trade with. Recounting tales of spice markets, shipwrecks and exotic locales, the exhibition will consist of approximately 250 works of art ranging from early maps, prints and painting to exquisite Chinese porcelain, ceramics, metalwork and decorative art.

In keeping with its ethos of making art accessible to all, on the exhibition's opening weekend - Saturday October 10th and Sunday October 11th - the Art Gallery of Western Australia will be holding a wonderful family day as part of the Awesome International Arts Festival, which will be taking place throughout Perth Cultural Centre. Beginning at 10.00am and extending until 4.00pm, the day will encompass a fabulous assortment of family-friendly creative activities all which relate to the exhibition's theme and the exotic places that are connected with this colourful historical period. Children, (and young-at-heart grown-ups, too), can paint with spices, engage in map-making, listen to storytellers and watch a traditional Indonesian shadow-puppet performance fun activities which will inspire even very young children to take a deeper interest in the exhibition and its theme. Best of all, these activities are all totally free (although admission will be charged for the exhibition itself) - making it a very affordable family day out.

In a nutshell, if you're always on the look-out for educational, fun and affordable activities for your children, then this exciting event at the Art Gallery of Western Australia ticks all the right boxes. Taking place at the end of the school holidays, it offers something a little different from the expensive, hyped-up action of the Royal Perth Show and the other pricey amusements that are available throughout the vacation period, and encourages youngsters to take an interest in history and engage in some really cool creative projects.

The 'Treasure Ships Art in the Age of Spices' opening weekend will be taking place on Saturday October 10th and Sunday October 11th, from 10am until 4pm. Although all the creative activities of the event will be free, if you want to attend the actual exhibition, normal exhibition entry costs apply. The activity program has been created to be relevant for children aged five to twelve, although there is plenty to entertain and inform people of all ages.

The Art Gallery of Western Australia is situated in Perth Cultural Centre. To learn more about this wonderful family day, take a look at the Art Gallery of Western Australia website or phone 08 9492 6600.

Great article Carolyn...ships and maps would not be something I would normally want to see in a museum...but your article changes that:)
