Set in the heart of quirky Newtown and surrounded by Thai restaurants, Tre Viet Vietnamese Restaurant offers a cultural experience, tasty food and excellent service.

The menu offers a wide range of Vietnamese specialties including Garlic Prawns, Charcoal Grilled Chicken, Beef Rice Noodle Soup, and more. The atmosphere is lively, and we were greeted, welcomed and seated as soon as we came in.

Atmosphere & Decor

The atmosphere of Tre Viet was bustling, yet romantic and calm with the soft dimming lighting. The decor is modern with hints of tradition with the photographs that are placed around the restaurant. The restaurant is donned with floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing passersby to have a sneaky peak into the restaurant.

It's cleverly divided into three sections: the front caters for couples or two people diners, the middle caters for tables of four to eight, and the back section reserved for large group bookings.

Menu

The menu is relatively easy to read, consists of typical Vietnamese items such as Pho with various meat options, fried rice, spring rolls, vermicelli dishes, Vietnamese pancake, betel leaf, chicken, beef, and duck main meals.

For a Vietnamese restaurant, it is slightly pricy - then again, it is located in Newtown.

Food

The food was served relatively quickly and still hot considering we dined on a busy night.

We ordered Spring Rolls ($12.50), Pancake ($16.50), Betal Leaf Beef ($14.50), and Skewer Beef ($21.50).

The Spring Rolls- a combination of mixed mince, prawn, pork and deep-fried. Spring Rolls are my all-time favourite Asian entrée must-have, and at Tre Viet, the Spring Rolls were crispy and golden on the outside, and the filling inside was well seasoned and flavoursome and was satisfying.

It was a generous serving of eight mini spring rolls, that were cooked perfectly and were a great starter to what is yet to come.
Betel Leaf Beef- minced beef wrapped in betel leaf and grilled. The betel leaf with mincemeat was cooked perfectly, seasoned well and filled with aromatic taste and aromas. The crushed peanuts added texture, and overall, it was enjoyable to eat.

The Pancake- Crispy pancake filled with prawn, squid, pork, and bean sprout served with green lettuce and herbs.

The dish looked delicious and we couldn't wait to sink our teeth into it.

Unfortunately, it was bland. However, when mixed with the lettuce and herbs and the side serving of dipping sauce, it was edible.

Couldn't taste the squid, however, the prawns were cooked perfectly, and the bean sprouts did add texture.

Our final dish was the Skewer Beef- traditional Vietnamese grilled roll. We decided to try this dish as we thought it was different and sounded interesting.

The dish was filled with aromatic aromas, and was mouthwatering. The beef was packed with flavour and cooked well. The addition of fried shallot, capsicums and Spanish onion added texture as well as boosted the taste as well as the hidden onions inside each meat roll.

Overall, for a Vietnamese restaurant, I felt it was a little pricy for what we ordered, as well as considering the location being in Newtown. With plenty of competition, I had expected more.

The service was excellent, and the wait staffs were friendly and attentive, the food arrived promptly, the atmosphere was cosy, yet lively and the food was tasty, however, somewhat mediocre, especially with the pancakes being the biggest disappointment.
