If you've ever sat at a circus performance and held your breath as you watched the trapeze artists fly, leap, and soar from one small swing to the other, now you have the chance to experience what they do each time they perform. The Trapeze School New York offers lessons and workshops, as well as the chance to simply experience the thrill of becoming an aerialist, at least for a little while.
At TSNY, you'll learn such things as swinging from a "regular" trapeze (the two ropes with the bar in the middle, as well as such things as performing aerial movements using "silks". These are exactly what they sound like—pieces of soft fabric that are suspended from either one or two points.
Hanging on to the "silks," you use your body to perform flips, rolls, spins, and just about anything else you want to or are able to. It requires quite a bit of upper body strength, so you may be a little limited in what you can do, but that's all right—you can just swing back and forth if you prefer.
Are there any limits or restrictions?
Children as young as four can participate, but sometimes they have trouble making it through the entire two-hour session. You probably want your child to be at least six years old to participate. In addition, if you weigh close to or over 205 pounds, we may feel it best that you don't participate. We're sorry, but our concern for your safety as well as the safety of our staff comes first.
Also, if you have certain health conditions or have suffered specific types of injuries in the past, or are currently recovering from an injury, we may recommend that you wait until you are completely healed, or again, we may have to tell you that you can't participate. We hope this won't happen, but there is the possibility.
What other information do I need to know?
Depending on the type of class you are taking, you may be in with as many as 10 students. This will actually make it more fun, so bring your friends if you'd like. You (or your parent or guardian) will have to sign a waiver. Also, parents of children under 18 must remain at TSNY during the entire class session.
