Have you ever thought about visiting China for its bright, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine? Save yourself some money on airfares and accomodation, and look no further - Brisbane has what you need.

Located conveniently in Robertson just shy of the main shopping centre, Sunnybank Plaza, Chat Tea is a great place for you to, well, chat with good friends and enjoy some aromatic tea. It has both indoor and outdoor seating, with traditional Chinese music played using traditional Chinese instruments (e.g. guzheng, pipa) indoors. The music compliments the look of the restaurant well - it's like immersing all your five senses into traditional Chinese culture.

With so many types of teas to choose from, it's hard to know where to begin. Don't fret - the staff at Chat Tea are very friendly, and more than happy to recommend teas to you based on your taste preferences (e.g. strong vs. weak).

I opted for the High Mountain Pu'er Tea (2012) - I wanted something less common than Jasmine and Oolong Tea, and the lady said that my original choice, Bingdao Raw Pu'er Tea, is very bitter. I'm not a big fan of overly strong and bitter teas, and since it was already nearing 10pm by the time I ordered, I opted for the version of the pu'er tea that was not 'raw'.

The High Mountain Pu'er Tea was perfect - aromatic, and of just the right strength. It was not so strong that it would affect my sleep, yet not so mild that it didn't have enough flavour.

The tea was served as part of a traditional Chinese tea ceremony - it was so intricate with so many small steps that I don't think I'll ever be able to remember all of it! The ceremony lasted approximately 5 minutes - I was enthralled by it all. Despite being of Chinese descent, and being 23 years old, I had yet to experience anything as traditional as Chat Tea's tea ceremony.

Chat Tea also has the cutest "traditional" Chinese high tea, with delicate Chinese desserts to compliment the aromatic tea.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to state exactly which desserts were included, although it did include fruit, ice cream, and possibly a mochi. The other desserts were ones I had never seen nor tasted before, but they were all delicious in their own unique way. There is bound to be one that suits your palate!

Chat Tea is open seven days a week from 1pm onwards. At 11pm, it closes late, and is perfect for night owls in search of caffeine, like I usually am after dinner. They also have complimentary wifi, which is always a bonus!

There is currently a deal on GroupOn for the Chinese high tea (drinks included) from $24 up, depending on which type of tea you like. My friend and I opted for Package A, which includes the desserts and a cold drink. However, on the day, we decided to upgrade to Package B, as it was a cold night and I wanted to experience the tea ceremony - the lady said she was happy to upgrade our package for us. I'm not sure how much these packages normally cost, but at $29 (2 people) for Chinese high tea with a traditional tea ceremony included, I reckon it is a really good deal and it would be a shame to miss out on it!
