Can you beat Sam Newman eating 'Sally's Big Ass Burger'?
Escaping the city is such a treat for the whole family. We all love leaving the concrete and crush of cars and people and escaping to the green leafy spaces around Melbourne. Melbourne is proclaimed as one of the most liveable cities in the world and I think it is because not only are we an art, cultural, culinary mecca, but that less than two hours out of Melbourne, we can either be at a stunning seaside beach around Port Phillip, lush green rainforests at the Black Spur, or in the towering eucalyptus forests of Beaconsfield Upper, Emerald, Olinda, Monbulk and the Sherbrooke Forest. It is wonderful to take in the sights, feed the cockatoos and rosellas, see the stunning views, and shop local artists shops. As a special 'Robin Hood' adventure, I would like to suggest you have a unique "bucket list" item to achieve just over an hour from the CBD and it is an Aussie ripper.
The cafe is the brainchild of Chef Sally and has won media acclaim in newspapers, radio, major television networks and now WeekendNotes for its culinary triumphs. The many articles on the walls add to the restaurant's ambience.
In 2016, Riley "Chompamatic" Murphy polished off his burger to help Sally raise funds for local homeless people. Her other passion is to fundraise for people with Autism. I should not just say 'other' - if there is a good fight to win, for one and all, then Sally and her family are front and centre in the community to try and help.
Lovers of these burgers travel from all over Australia, Perth, Adelaide, and the Blue Mountains, time and time again to celebrate this feast. They bring their classic cars, vintage bikes and stop here to rest and get the best in cuisine.
And there is not just this one burger on offer, the wall is covered by taste bud tempting luncheon and dinner options. The steak, which is cooked to perfection, would make a cattle farmer's mouth melt.
They all have their secret sauces and \ not one of them comes from a jar. All of Sally's saucy sauces are homemade with secret recipes. These she will not reveal as she wants you to come back and enjoy another taste sensation on another day. For all our sakes, I hope she considers us mere mortals and patents these and starts bottling them for the major chains or other flash restaurants as they are so moreish!
Sally is respected and celebrated for her tireless devotion to this cafe, her children and events that support local community needs.
And she has one such community event coming up this month. This is your chance to join in the annual "Dim Sim Scoff Off". Test your skills and try to beat last year's record of 10 downed dims in 5 minutes. All you young lads be prepared - last year's winner was an old timer who had what it took. He whistled off with all the prize money, the trophy and 60 dim sims to share with the family. Entry is only $15.00. Not a bad reward for 5 minutes of intensely tummy and taste buds satisfying.
All those famous movie cars will be on display for you to feast your eyes on after your tummy is so so satisfied. Gawk at the mint collection from the movies Cars, Scooby Doo, and our Australian icon Mad Max. What a way to top off the day.
This young lad was overwhelmed by the challenge of Sally's burger but only briefly. Smiles all around in the end. This can create the quiet comatose on the trip home, which every parent craves. Plus there might be leftovers for lunches the next day.
I would not bring your children unless they like chips as they are to die for. My girls actually rev up and road trip here to have a serve of Sally's chips with her secret sauce. They beg me to go the long way home to stop at Tradies and Ladies Cafe for yet another treat. Once your family taste Sally's cuisine, it will become a regular outing for family and friends.
So put aside the 18th of November from 10am to 3pm for this delectable day and meet Sally, the Big Assed Mascot, at the same time. Set your direction to 28 Beaconsfield Emerald Road, Beaconsfield Upper, Victoria 3808 and be warned - do not eat breakfast!
You are going to need your full flown appetite for this fab feast on the day! Even if you do not score the trophy, you can take home memorabilia to cherish at home and show what you have achieved. You may even join the wall of fame which includes photos of all the celebrities who have come and conquered this amazing burger.
This is also a wonderful venue for that fab birthday, anniversary or family reunion. It has a lovely deck for enjoying the bird calls and gentle cool mountain breezes. What could top all this? Sally serves the best barista coffee in the area. This place is a 5-star cafe and a credit to this beautiful mountain region.
Sally's Tradies and Ladies Cafe is open Monday to Saturday (closed Sunday).
