Toy Factory and Big Rocking Horse are located in Gumeracha, which is situated in the Adelaide Hills, about 45 minutes from the city. It is a great family destination and also a great spot for tourists.
The Toy Factory has a great range of toys which are made on site. I found it really refreshing to find kids toys that are not made of plastic and are not going to break after a week! They also cover a wide price range so you don't need to spend up big on a memento if you don't want to. During the week, visitors can tour the workshop and see how the different toys are made which should appeal to some of the bigger kids. The factory also offers lots of different souvenirs and gifts for sale too.
The Big Rocking Horse is just that, big and it can be climbed for only $2. The kids get a certificate for doing so which should impress the little ones.
There is a small wildlife park which is free to have a walk through and has some very tame kangaroos, chickens, goats and ducks (amongst other animals) that will come straight up to you for a taste of the feed that you can buy for them. Some of them are a bit cheeky and will snatch the whole bag of food if you let them.
There is a café on site and a large grassed area with some picnic tables where you can enjoy your own picnic lunch if you prefer. We found it great that they had this option because kids always seem to prefer sitting outside and doing so makes lunch a bit more enjoyable for mum and dad.
The Toy Factory is a great way to spend a relaxing day out with the family and is a relatively cheap day out too. My 18 month old son thought that animals were the best thing to see but I really liked the toys and to be honest, I could have gotten much more carried away than I did buying toys for our friends kids.
