Get down and dirty as world renowned challenge arrives
After years of watching the Brits, the Americans and even fellow Aussies go through it, finally, Sunshine Coasters will get a crack. I'm talking about Tough Mudder. The hardcore, 20km long obstacle courses are, by the organisers' own accord, probably the toughest event on the planet.

August 17 and 18, 2013, will see a plot of land in Caloundra South transformed into an adult's playground. While the exact course won't be known until closer to the event, from past events we know there is the Arctic Enema, the Berlin Walls, Electroshock Therapy and, perhaps best of all, the fire walker. Check out a sample map for the Sunshine Coast course here. This isn't kids stuff, after all you have to be 18 years or older to apply.
This will not be for the faint of heart. It's a good thing it was announced almost a year out because even the fit will need some training to get through this in one piece. Tough Mudder have put together a couple of boot camps for those who haven't exercised in a long time (or perhaps never) all the way to those who consider themselves the fittest of the fit and eat concrete pebbles for breakfast. Check out what best suits you here and get ready.
The Sunshine Coast's inaugural event is going to be massive. Before the exact location was even announced, more than 10,000 people had signed up to compete. Up to 30,000 could take part over the two days, organisers say.

For an event this tough, this diabolical, it had to come from the mind of someone who has done this sort of thing before. Turns out, Will Dean, a former counter-terrorism agent for the British Government, came up with the idea for Tough Mudder out of sheer frustration with unimaginative and repetitive marathons, triathlons, and the like.

Like I said, Tough Mudder will not be for the faint of heart. There will be a hefty dose of mud, ice, fire and even electric shocks coming our way, but to the tens of thousands of participants expected over the two days, they wouldn't have it any other way. Get tough and sign up.
