This endurance race is run by maniacs for other maniacs. If that's you, then read on. Over three million people have participated in Tough Mudder since it began in 2010 in the US. It's one of the world's fastest-growing athletic activities and it's becoming HUGE in Australia. Are you tough enough?
Tough Mudder is definitely not for the unfit or faint-hearted: it has been described as "the toughest event on the planet". The Full Tough Mudder is open to women and men over 16 years of age (and over 14 for the shorter Half Tough Mudder). It is not really a race: it is a challenge. Its emphasis is on teamwork and camaraderie rather than course time. Mudders are aiming to overcome their fears (electroshock anyone?), helping fellow competitors through the obstacles and making new friends - all in thousands of litres of A-grade mud.
Mudders are rewarded with an orange finisher headband after the run. When you complete your first Tough Mudder, you get a coloured headband (like the belt levels in Judo or Karate). The highest reward is the black headband for ten successful Tough Mudders. After two successful Tough Mudders you are called a "legionnaire" and can join the Tough Mudder Legion for extra perks such as free photos.

You may not be fit enough or tough enough to participate but you're tough enough to attend and watch the runners. Spectators are of course welcome and you will be in for a great spectacle. You will need to have a spectator pass to enter the event. You can buy tickets in advance online (at a discount) or on-site. Children under 13 are free and can just turn up at the event on the weekend and don't need tickets. You can download a handy Spectator Information Pack which includes tips on parking ($20.00), directions, camping and merchandise available. You can't take BYO alcohol into the site (but there is a beer tent). Sorry, no dogs allowed at the event.
Tough Mudder's full lineup of team-oriented obstacles guarantees that you'll cross the finish line with more friends than you started with. Whether it's through a helping hand or an extra vote of confidence, your fellow Mudders will be there for you every step of the way. Whether you arrive solo or with a team, all you need to come with is the strength to leave your fears in the parking lot and the willingness to push the boundaries of your comfort zone.
