If you have the time and can go, you should spend a few weeks and check out Tasmania. It is the total package.

Though small in size, it is large on value, fresh in air and the roads are amazing to drive, taking you all over the island.

The trip can be done in a number of ways, starting in Hobart. You can fly there from all over the world, and directly from Brisbane.

There is not shortage of accommodation. From the lap of luxury, to mid-range, to budget priced, you can find the spot that is right for you. As a traveler on a budget, check out the Hobart Hostel which is situated within walking distance of the city center. The value is great especially if you plan to be here for a while.

The diversity of the landscape is incredible, with 19 national parks, a million trees and just as many hiking trails. There is no shortage of places to walk. The beauty is naturally stunning, the variety of food, wine, cheese, and honey will have your senses reeling.

From Hobart you can travel pretty much anywhere on the island.

Cradle Mountain is a busy tourist destination but truly a must see. Though you will be with hundreds of others, the hiking component of this place is gorgeous, and it allows you to head off and do your own thing.

You can head to the Tasman Peninsula on the south east coast, stay in the Big 4 Discovery Park outside of, not to be missed - Port Arthur , the old restored convict settlement. Here you can access boat rides and a host of things to do. The hiking component here is outstanding, especially if you hike Cape Raoul and Cape Hauy.

Then further up the east coast you can stop at Swansea, staying in Swansea Beach Chalets , though there are several accommodations in the area. This allows you time to go to Freycinet National Park and Wine Glass Bay in all its splendor.

Further north is the Bay of Fires. The towns of St. Helens and Binalong Bay offer cottages and houses to rent in the area where pristine beaches are dotted with the incredible algae covered rocks and clear blue waters. Your camera will get a good workout here.

The amazing city of Launceston, with its heritage buildings and shops, will have you wanting to spend a few days strolling the streets, though there are numerous things to do in the area.

Devonport is an hour away from Launceston or you can come from Cradle Mountain. The Spirit of Tasmania calls in to port here. The sea going ferry carries you across Bass Straight from Melbourne and back again if you choose to travel this way.

Tasmania has so much more to offer than I can write about in one article. It truly is the total package for the traveler looking for beauty, nature and fabulously fresh food and wine.
