Fast food without the guilt
When your office is in a dead spot as far as cafes are concerned, you quickly develop a fondness for the nearest lunch option.
And while proximity is definitely a factor, that's not the only reason To's Lunch Bar has become my go-to place for a quick, fresh, delicious lunch.
A hole-in-the-wall establishment on the eastern side of Morphett Street between Franklin and Grote Streets, To's is a hive of activity at lunchtime, attracting a broad range of clientele including tradies and smartly attired office workers.
The ever-smiling staff run a lean operation. There's just the two of them, and they have a lot of things on the go: oven cooking the meat, preparing salads, cooking noodles and rice, replenishing the servery. Not to mention taking quick, efficient care of a line that sometimes snakes to the door.
The menu includes Vietnamese meat rolls, salad bowls, cold rolls, chicken curry puffs, dim sims, spring rolls and satays. To cater to a broader crowd, there is also a selection of hot pastries.
It's clear that most customers are regulars, who line up with military precision to place their orders which are customised according to requirements: Soy sauce? Sweet or hot chilli? Coriander? Fried shallots? Peanuts?
The salads are fresh, the serves generous (particularly the meat) and the prices more than reasonable. Each time I order the rice bowl, I promise myself I won't eat the whole thing, but invariably I do because it's just so damn tasty.
Given that To's is not far from the Adelaide Central Market but has garnered its own devoted following, speaks to the quality of the food and the excellent, friendly service.
To's is open Monday to Friday 8am – 4pm, and Saturdays from 8.30am – 2.30pm
