Back in the days growing up in Asia, watching Hong Kong's martial arts movies was imperative and essential part of our daily grind. Fantasising Jacky Chan's drunken master moves or Bruce Lee's fist of fury would always bring a delight to every child's imagination.During the recent competition posted by WeekendNotes to attend a month's training at Tora Shotokan Karate-Do in Dickson, I didn't have second thoughts of registering my interest, hoping to be chosen as guest. And then I did. My childhood fantasy will finally become a reality.

Arriving early at their training centre for the 6pm class, I got the chance to watch the kids with their parents learning different movements from the sensei. They also played a game which was fun but at the same time, teaching them principles they can apply in life – being a good sport and not giving up when losing.

In my gym clothes, I was a bit intimidated by the other participants in their uniforms and club badge at the start of the class. But Catherine sensei made me feel comfortable and showed so much patience in showing me the basic moves and proper techniques. My background in boxing had helped me in learning the martial arts punches as opposed to the style I knew with boxing gloves. It was enjoyable until Catherine instructed me to punch her in the stomach. I was nervous but she re-assured me that I won't hurt her. I did punch her but I was holding back a bit as I've never laid a finger on anyone directly. After several attempts, I managed to unleash a magnitude of force and indeed, she wasn't hurt at all. Whew! A big sigh of relief. I was impressed by the strength of her core.

My training may had been short-lived but definitely an experience that has added some form of characteristics into my life. I still practice up to this day the warm-up techniques I've learnt that supplements my running programme. If you want to learn the discipline or be involved in your kids activities, give this martial art a go. All the details that will get you started are all on their website . You can drop by the centre if you want to watch all the action from the side or to personally speak to Catherine sensei. She'll be more than glad to answer any of your questions. Hi-yah!
