Survive your midwinter shivers by indulging in the 5 hottest shows in Melbourne this July. With everything from puppetry to cabaret, from the newest works to tales as old as time think global and buy local by heading out to our live performance venues rather than the megaplex cinemas. Here are my top tips to make midwinter fly on by.

A QUARRELING PAIR

July 6 - 9, La Mama Theatre, $20

A program of three miniature puppet plays A Quarreling Pair is inspired by the play of the same name by Jane Bowles . Bowles' piece is a study of safety and freedom in personal relationships. Complementing the namesake first piece, the two following puppet plays expand on those themes exploring the abstract imagery initiated by Bowles. All the play focus on two sisters and both Lally Katz and Cythia Troup explore these themes in the subsequent pieces.

ADULTING

11-16 July, The Butterfly Club, from $25

Tash York delights us once again with her wine-loving antics and witty repartee as she sets out on a mission to figure out what it is to be an adult. Adulting is the process of doing grown up things like holding down a job, cooking dinner, and doing your taxes. With a ballsy voice, dynamic energy and ability to rap on command York will provide an evening of matchless cabaret.

IMPERIAL BELLS OF CHINA

20 July, Melbourne Recital Centre, From $39

Unlike any other orchestral performance, the Hubei Chime Bells Orchestra brings The Imperial Bells of China to the Melbourne Recital Centre. Dating back to 443 BC these bells were discovered in 1778 in the Zenghouyi Tomb. 65 bells hang in 2 sets of wooden racks. They weigh almost 5 tonnes! Don't miss this chance to experience music, culture and spiritual history.

BOWIE & MERCURY RISING

26 - 30 July, Chapel Off Chapel, from $30

Celebrating the music and lives of David Bowie and Freddie Mercury , an actress searches for hope. Through her journey we imagine the life and times of these two great artists. Using music and dance composer Warren Wills returns to Chapel Off Chapel with this new concert. Don't miss this spellbinding spectacle.
